Pale skin. Dark Hair. Brown Eyes.
Yeah, definitely don't know ANY white people with that description. Foolish Koreans to assume you were white.

I really don't understand it when people whom I meet and who are of Latino heritage insist that they aren't white when they often have fairer skin than I do or in some cases slightly darker skin than the average so called white person. |
They look Mediterranean in other words? Yeah, I don't get it either, particularly from countries like Argentina or Chile where the general population is much more purely European than in the States. |

if a black person told me he wasn't black then I'd assume he was visually impaired.
If he specified a cultural distinction such as caribbean, not american, then it would fit. But to deny an obvious skin tone is nonsensical. Its like saying that the sky is not blue.
Americanisms have perverted the english language once again... exchanging the true meaning of a word for its connotation. |

Could you clarify: in your mind, are all Latinos non-white, Mexicans in particular, or are you talking about yourself in particular?
In my mind, and most of the people I know (although probably not absolutely everyone), Latinos are not white. Some may have white skin, blond hair, blue eyes, but they are not Caucasian. If someone asks "Are you white, asian, black? what?", the response would be "I'm Hispanic/Latino/etc." When filling out forms and it asks for race/ethnicity, we check the Hispanic box. |
This is so sad.
Ok, so "white" or Caucasian, is a race. My better half, born in Peru and naturalized American, is white/Caucasian. She is from Italian stock. She is Hispanic and she is white. She identifies as a white American woman. Ok? Hispanic is a multi-racial linguistic group that includes Filipinos but not Brazilians. Do you see a 'race' or even ethnicity in that? No. It is a linguistic group.
If you are of European stock and were born in America you are a white American. Suck it up. That is who you are. If you are a mixed European/Aztec you can do the whole La Raza dance. |

This is an interesting discussion by people in the know. Question though - on most forms Filipinos are separate from Hispanics.
I am "Caucasian" and my daughter is from my ex-wife who is Filipina.
She is 14 now and taller than her mom and looks more like me than her mom.
She is doing well though, and does not seem to have an identity crisis, which I am so happy for. She does have a lot of Hispanic friends and is learning Spanish. |

I met a very white Mexican man in a well known metropolitan area in the US a few years ago. We got along really well, and I thought he was a very interesting and professional guy. Well, one time the topic of migrant labor came up (not sure how), but he was quick to distance himself from that class/makeup of people and said something to the effect of "They are the working class of Mexico and are often less educated." Having never been to Mexico, it made me curious about the white upper class that makes up a part of the country. |

Um correct me if I'm wrong but....
Being pale is considered a desirable trait here in Korea. The paler, the better. This is why there's all the skin bleach and such.
Therefore, why would you say that to a Korean? It's not unlike, while at the pool, walking up to another woman and saying, "Look, my chest is bigger than yours." Or a guy walking up to another and saying, "Look, my biceps are bigger than yours." |

Self-loathing is common to all cultures....

A useful reminder...
Hispanic is a linguistic group, not a racial group. White is a racial group, not a cultural one. |

Because Korea in ethinically homogenous, and their neighboring countries (Japan, China, Mongolia, etc...) are all ethnically homogenous, its not strange to think that some Koreans mix up race and nationality.
For many Asian countries, your nationality IS your race.
To help you understand, its like this. Many Americans think Mexican food they eat is what they eat is what people in Mexico eat. Why do they think that? Because you'll get a Chimichanga and Nachos in a Mexican restaurant in New York or a Mexican Restaurant in Florida.
Is that REAL Mexican food? Of course not. Its Tex-Mex. But, because people associate that food with what they see around themselves, they think it is.
Are you still confused?
Koreans think Americans are white because they are used to the notion of a nation having a homogeneous population.
This is the only useful response I have received. They're used to having a homogeneous population. |
