Hahaha. Its you. 300K for three fillings? A steal in my opinion.Korean Medical Insurance does not cover composite(white) fillings as it is considered cosmetic.

That was 300k for all 3 fillings, right? If so, it sounds like a good deal. I'm not familiar with prices in Korea but compared to elsewhere, it sounds good.

Do you have a choice of metal vs white? Personally, I've had better experiences with metal fillings, but some friends who are dentists said that he benefit of the white ones is that they can be removed later, if need be. (And they look pretty if someone even happens to stare into your mouth.)

A dentist once told me that the cost depends upon how much resin is used in the filling. A "normal" size filling will cost 50,000 won. However, if more resin is required it will cost much more. If the cavity is too big, the dentist will put in an inlay. This can cost 150,000 to 250,000 - but, its much stronger.

In the other dentist post, I recommended Boston Classic. If the location is okay, go there and have a consultation.

With NHIC a basic drill and fill is 3500 won.

Where are you going that you get asked for 100k won per filling?

.

Metal fillings are cheaper, but the dentist needs to drill more. Resin (white) ones cost about 90-110k, but the holes can be smaller. Most dentists advise against metal fillings nowadays.

I think that the reasons they advise against them is that, as you say, they have to drill more. As well, they are harder to remove if need be. Removing them involves drilling them out, plus a bit more of the surrounding tooth. With the white ones (I think there are more than 1 type, varying by quality) the dentist can shatter them with a special tool and then the pieces can be easily removed. In that case, I think the dentist can just put another filling in. I've heard though that the metal ones (if done properly) are more durable. I've very rarely had problems with metal fillings. White ones on the other hand have often cracked and fallen out within the first year (even one that had a pin in the center).

I thought that health insurance doesn't cover dental. That's good to know.

Were your cleanings/checkups covered by national HI or private?

These are prices I was given 2 years ago, outside of Seoul:

Amalgam (covered by insurance): 8,000
White: about 70,000 (no coverage)
Gold: 100,000 (I assume this fluctuates).

Of course, gold is supposed to be the best, white looks good, and amalgam is the most affordable (and people will tell you how bad it is for you...I don't know if it is or isn't).

I'm seeing a dentist today for a cleaning (in Seoul) and hope to hear that I don't need any work done (but I've always been distrustful of dentists).
