Maybe I'm out of the loop, but Aijalon Gomes isn't getting to much press in the American media. That is unlike a certain pair of pretty female Asian-descent reporters. Any idea why... hmm..

Anyways, Carter has finally made it to NK to try to get him released, after s long time of waiting. I know the US gov't has been working on it, but there just doesn't seem to be the support that there were for Laura Ling and Euna Lee.

He doesn't work for a TV network owned in part by Al Gore. That would be a pretty big difference.

I do like the Asian Privilege reference though. We have a whole committee of people up here at the top who just aren't getting the recognition that they deserve.

Weren't the released women there acting (ostensibly) as journalists while Gomes made his way over proselytize?

I can think of several possible/probable reasons why there has been a differing media response. Most of them are too obvious to bother typing out (ex. poor timing on Gomes part, etc).

Yes, I think Caniff is correct: different reasons for being there.

I first read the subject as Games, not Gomes so my initial reaction was, "Uh, well maybe because no one has ever heard of those Games??"

He's does seem to be pretty religious. It's not too clear if he was going there to proselytize or something else.

Still, I can't help but think this guy isn't as interesting to the American public, and that's sad.

I don't disagree with you on that one. I guess the issue becomes why would the US save those reporters. Why would the US go to such trouble for them. I mean, I know why, but..

Lisa Ling and Euna Lee both work for Al Gore.
Lisa Ling has a sister, Laura Ling, who went to Korea earlier to record a documentary about a doctor giving eye surgery to a thousand NKs with glaucoma.
Laura Ling knows the media buttons to push for getting a story heard.

Gomes had no plan in NK, he just wanted to "help the people".
Gomes is black.

Anyway, they both got to meet former Presidents and they both got out.

He was an ESL Teacher in Korea and I'm still curious does anybody remember this guy, or did anybody work with him?

Gomes should have been left to rot in that N.Korean gulag. THAT should be the extent of attention paid to him. Black, white, purple, green...the guy should have been left there. Why does the US even get involved in this? After all, the mentality is, according to embassy websites, is that there is nothing they can do for you if you break the law(or get screwed by unscrupulous hagwon owners Laughing . Yet this waste of space crosses illegally into N. Korea and Carter has to fly all the way out to help him. Rolling Eyes

Although a little harsh in tone, I basically agree with what you're saying. The dangerous thing about actions such as this is that it gives N.Korea and Kim Jong Il leverage over the US. Carter had to come and rescue him, and KJI decided to give a big F YOU to the US by not even being in the country to meet him.

Note: Illegally entering North Korea is highly unlikely to 'help the people.' It's also a personal choice, which your government has ZERO responsibility for.

He doesn't get much attention because he is an idiot and they should have left him there.

Should the women previously rescued also have been left there? I've heard that argument made.

I believe so, yes. Both Gomes and the women knew what they were doing and what the consequences of their actions might be, yet chose to continue into North Korean territory anyway. Since when does an American expat knowingly breaking the laws of another country warrant the interference of popular U.S. political figures (well, when capital punishment and lifetime sentences are not involved)?

I'm trying to lose some weight and deserve a good beatdown to man up. Perhaps I will cross the border because I know the US will be there to rescue me. I may even get the chance to meet a former Democratic president!
