I would venture to say alcohol is a great cause of inefficiency in Korea.

In the west, a few people have drinking problems and call in sick. Here, so many people overdrink at night and come into work regardless, being inefficient all day.

Koreans spend a lot of time "working." This includes official events: dinners, sporting events, competitions. Lot a lot of time is spent at work but it is not constant work like what we think of in the West.

If "working" is defined by waiting around for customers, surfing the Internet for porn, playing Starcraft and just standing around doing eff all, then, yes, Korea is one hardworking nation.
