Dire Straits - Brothers in Arms

My favorite line of a song ever is Prince in Little Red Corvette; "I guess I should have known by the way you parked your car sideways, that it wouldn't last."

So many to choose from but I'll go with Time by Pink Floyd:

Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
You fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town
Waiting for someone or something to show you the way

Tired of lying in the sunshine
Staying home to watch the rain
And you are young and life is long
And there is time to kill today
And then one day you find
Ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run
You missed the starting gun

And you run, and you run to catch up with the sun, but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in a relative way, but you're older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death

Every year is getting shorter
Never seem to find the time
Plans that either come to nought
Or half a page of scribbled lines
Hanging on in quiet desparation is the English way
The time is gone
The song is over
Thought I'd something more to say

Home, home again
I like to be here when I can
When I come home cold and tired
It's good to warm my bones beside the fire
Far away across the field
The tolling of the iron bell
Calls the faithful to their knees
To hear the softly spoken magic spells

well that's your opinion and you are entitled to it. But, just because it's old doesn't make it well written.

+1
I know a lot of people are gonna hate me for this but I really dislike the Beatles, I know everyone in the entire world worships them but I just don't like old stuff. I do like 80's and 90's music though so I guess "old" is relative.

Roger Waters is an incredible lyricist.

As for best songs ever? Are you joking? There's no such thing! There are songs that will speak to you and songs that won't. That is all.

Saying that The Beatles were bad songwriters is pretty much the same as saying that 97% of popular music made after 1967 is badly written, and I think it also means that you should probably stop listening to music, because you're just kidding yourself at this point... you hate all of it.

Anyway, the best song ever is Eye Of The Tiger by Survivor. It is such a great song that they couldn't possibly write another song like it... even though Pink Floyd had already basically written the song on their album 'The Wall'. It is a song about getting through this tough tough world in the best way you know how to, and not letting anything get you down... and feeling more alive and confident in yourself by not backing down from the fight.

The second best song ever is Luka by Suzanna Vega. It is a sad, powerful, moving song about someone being abused, but hiding away... or maybe they're fighting with the guy from the Eye Of The Tiger.

I Don't Like Mondays - The Boomtown Rats

The silicon chip inside her head
Gets switched to overload
And nobodys gonna go to school today
Shes gonna make them stay at home
And daddy doesnt understand it
He always said she was good as gold And he can see no reasons
'Cos there are no reasons
What reason do you need to be show-ow-ow-ow-own?

Tell me why
I dont like Mondays
Tell me why
I dont like Mondays
Tell me why
I dont like Mondays
I wanna shoo-oo-woo-woo-woo-oot the whole day down

The Telex machine is kept so clean
And it types to a waiting world
And mother feels so shocked
Fathers world is rocked
And their thoughts turn to their own little girl
Sweet 16 aint that peachy keen
Now that aint so neat to admit defeat
They can see no reasons
'Cuz there are no reasons
What reasons do you need?
Oh Oh oh whoa whoa

Tell me why
I dont like Mondays
Tell me why
I dont like Mondays
Tell me why
I dont like Mondays
I wanna shoo-oo-oo-woo-woo-oot
The whole day down, down, down, shoot it all down

And all the playing's stopped in the playground now
She wants to play with the toys a while
And school's out early and soon we'll be learning
And the lesson today is how to die
And then the bullhorn crackles
And the captain tackles
(With the problems of the how's and why's)
And he can see no reasons
'Cos there are no reasons
What reason do you need to die, die?
Oh Oh Oh

Tell me why
I dont like Mondays
Tell me why
I dont like Mondays
Tell me why
I dont like
I dont like (Tell me why)
I dont like Mondays
Tell me why
I dont like
I dont like (Tell me why)
I dont like Mondays
Tell me why
I don't like Mondays
I wanna shoo-oo-oo-woo-woo-woot the whole day down
