As I'm getting tired/bored of the online job search thing(experienced teacher but neither white nor gyopo, few replies from recruiters), I'm thinking about going to Korea to look for jobs in person.

Would this increase the chances of getting hired quickly, and
what are some good strategies for doing this once I am there?

I am aware there is a hagwon blacklist, but what about a good/reliable hagwon list? I would have to work on an e2, so don't want to get in a bad situation as I would be stuck for a year.

IF you have had a previous E2
AND
you don't mind paying the airfare out of your own pocket

Then go for it.
Bonus if you can communicate in Korean cause far too many hagwan bosses can't communicate in English.

If you have NOT had a previous E2
Then your options are seriously limited so you might as well keep trying from abroad.

the reason why your options are limited if you have not had an e2 (or any prior korean visa) is because your first visa has to be obtained on your home country's soil. so even if you're here in korea, and you find a job, you're going to have to return home to get your visa. and that would be a complete pain in the butt.

keep trying online, go through as many recruiters as you can, if you know anyone in korea contact them and see what they can do, and don't give up. there's something out there for you, i promise. Smile

Not exactly. I came over without a job and without a previous E2 and was able to get one very quickly (this being a year ago). Being in country and able to take ASAP positions was very helpful, and I did end up at a good school (though it does show up on some hagwon blacklists).

If you're American you can take a quick flight to Guam, which is actually about the same price or cheaper than the school flying you to Japan. It's risky, but if you're American and make clear to schools/recruiters that Guam is the way you want to go, they'll probably be accommodating. But some more experienced people may say that I was extremely lucky and that this is bad advice.

northway, once you got here, what was your strategy? Walk into all branches of the major chain hagwons w/resume in hand, and speak to the director? Or get off at a train station and go to all hagwons in the vicinity? I want to avoid wasting time going into the shady places.

I actually just used recruiters and asked friends. Ultimately I ended up getting a job where they needed someone to start the next day. I had to work without a visa for about a week, but I ended up with a decent gig. As far as walking into hagwons I think you'd kind of be trying to find a needle in a haystack, but I could be wrong.
