Rupert Murdoch's News America Inc has donated $1m (637,000) to the Republican Governors Association ahead of November's US mid-term elections.

The donation from the parent company of Fox News helped the RGA more than double its fundraising in the second quarter of 2010.

The association helps elect Republican candidates to US governorships.

Democrats said the donation meant Fox News had "crossed a bright line" regarding impartiality.

"Fox can no longer pretend that it is a fair and balanced news organisation when Rupert Murdoch greenlights a million dollar contribution to defeat Democratic governors," Democratic Governors Association executive director Nathan Daschle said.

White House spokesman Bill Burton said: "It creates a lot of questions."

Media conglomerate News Corp, of which News America Inc is a subsidiary, defended the donation.

"News Corporation has always believed in the power of free markets and organisations like the RGA, which have a pro-business agenda, [to] support our priorities at this most critical time for our economy," the Associated Press quoted spokesman Jack Horner as saying.

Official filings show the RGA raised more than $19m during the second quarter of 2010, compared to more than $9m in the first quarter.

The Democratic Governors Association reported raising $9m in the second quarter, according to AP.

Wouldn't it be wonderfully ironic now if that money were used to get Ron Paul elected and he enacted all the anti-corporate policies that News Corp. opposes? Laughing

And Google and its staff contributed almost that much to the Democratic Party.

Eric Schmidt himself contributed over $250,000 to Democrats under the PAC regime.

Google isn't a NEWS organisation. "News" is meant to be unbiased and this shows FOX obviously has an agenda, a bias and an objective.

Except there is no news which DOESN'T have a bias of some kind. "News" always reflects the journalist/editor/CEO's bias...even if it isn't always obvious. It's human nature. The only unbiased news would be written by a robot...and even then it would depend on its programing.

All news organizations have an agenda, a bias and an objective. FOX is just more open about it. This statement about news being meant to be unbiased is a fantasy claim which hasn't been true in many years if ever.

This is partly true. The difference, though, isn't that only Fox is "open" about it, but that Fox doesn't even bother to strive for objectivity (a fact made more ironic by its slogan "fair and balanced").

Additionally, for those interested in what unavoidable bias may imply, here's a great quote by historian and decorated veteran Howard Zinn:

Quote:
The history of any country, presented as the history of a family, conceals fierce conflicts of interest (sometimes exploding, most often repressed) between conquerors and conquered, masters and slaves, capitalists and workers, dominators and dominated in race and sex. And in such a world of conflict, a world of victims and executioners, it is the job of thinking people, as Albert Camus suggested, not to be on the side of the executioners.

One reason so many people appear to side with the executioners relates to the psychological defense mechanism known as "identification with the aggressor." It is too anxiety-provoking to allow into consciousness the idea that our father-figure government is actually a mean, cruel, selfish, repressive, heartless, exploiting tyrant, so instead they go with the idea that, while there may be some flaws, everything it does is basically for our own good. This soothing thought protects one's ego from having to think of itself as a victim.

Perhaps. It's almost definitely also a consequence of poor-to-misinfiromed knowledge of history and lack of or resistance to circumspection.

Right. Google is just a news provider, and a beneficiary of State Department resources.

This happens on both sides.

Former Australian Prime Minister Malcome Fraser said last night:

Quote:
There is certainly a great yearning amongst both parties for a different approach, a broader appreach, one which has some vision for the future of Australia and one which really tackles difficult issues and and is prepared to explain those issues, and not respond to focus groups or todays polls or to pressure from News Corporation.

The audience went quiet, and there were a few giggles...and he continued...

Quote:
You think thats funny?

Just look at the paper. Read that paper and read all their papers and see where their pressures come and where their purposes and objectives lie. Not just in Australia but in the United States, the attacks on Obama and in Britain also.

Murdoch has extraordinary power. The most powerful unelected man in the western world. And he has wielded this power for decades.

That's very true. It puts the $1 million contribution into perspective, doesn't it?
