According to Statistics Korea, 445,000 babies were newly born last year, the lowest number since 2005.
The nation�s fertility rate -- the average number of children that would be born to a woman over her lifetime -- also decreased to 1.15 last year from 1.19 in 2008. The OECD average currently stands at 1.64.
As more young people delay getting married or decide to remain single, the age of a woman�s first birth is rising.
In 2009, women in their 20s and early 30s gave birth less compared to the previous year, while those in their late 30s and 40s saw their delivery rate increase over the year.
The number of babies born to women in their late 20s decreased by 13,000 last year, accounting for 61 percent of the total decline in child births.
The average age of pregnant women last year was 30.97, older than 28.68 back in 1999.
In a separate report, the Ministry of Health and Welfare predicted, however, more babies would be born this year.
As of May, the number of childbirths and marriages increased 2,000 and 3,000, respectively, this year compared to the same period of last year, the ministry said.
�Many couples have refrained from getting married or having children since the global financial crisis in 2008. However, some indicators started showing signs of recovery this year,� the ministry explained in the report.
The government plans to announce a national plan to deal with the low birthrate and fast aging as early as October.
The second national plan would contain measures supporting working mothers and offering welfare benefits to households with multiple children, the ministry said.
Meanwhile, the nation�s centuries-old preference for baby boys seemed to be receding, according to the latest data from Statistics Korea.
In 2009, 106.4 boys were born for every 100 girls, which fell within the internationally recognized norm of 103-107. The ratio had peaked in 1990 when 116.5 boys were born for every 100 girls here.
�The sexual parity has remained normal over the past three years. The nation�s preference for boys seems to become gradually weaker,� said an official of the statistics agency.
However, the disparity between sexes remained among third children, with 114 boys per 100 girls. Especially, people in southern part of the country still preferring boys, with Daegu, Ulsan and North Gyeongsang Province showing a relatively higher disparity between sexes.

| Maybe those government plans to let couples go home and get naked didn't work all that well. |

I know. Its a positive thing.
They could improve their standard of living further by allowing more immigration... to do all those jobs that koreans don't want to. |

The stats don't account for K girls getting dragged to an abortion clinic by their mother.

I'm pretty sure their mothers don't know- not only the women I've dated (not that many- don't think I'm bragging), but all the women my friends have dated too have all said their parents think they're virgins, and that if they ever found out otherwise they'd be dead. |
