I seem to have developed one, and it hurts like dixie.

Any tips or remedies? I'm loath to go to the Dr. just yet, as it seems like it's at the point where it can only be aggravated. It isn't improving though, so if it gets much worse, I will need to get some antibiotics, at least.

This isn't trivial. My finger is swelled up by half its size. Red and swollen, and pus comes out when I squeeze it. You can develop gangrene and ulceration from in grown nails (I don't see that happening here, though). Twisted Evil Rolling Eyes

I've always found that a simple over-the-counter anti-infection cream/gel (such as Neosporin) and a bandage for a few days did the trick.

This sort of use is not a primary contributer to the rise of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Successfully combating that problem requires that doctors prescribe antibiotics ONLY for bacterial infections and that patients finish the entire supply, and our farms stop force-feeding livestock megadoses of antibiotics.

Cheers. Might duck down to the pharmacy during morning tea.

I think the antibiotics resistance thing might be over-hyped anyway. It's one of those things that has been going to happen for years, but hasn't. And they are constantly developing new drugs, anyway. Feeding mass loads to cows is a huge mistake though. Grain subsidies are allow that to happen.

I'm no doc but this is what the doc said (re; ingrown toenail and I imagine it's the same for a finger). Get an exacto knife, put on a blade type that's a twenty degree triangle. Take the doc's antiobiotics and every day work at prying/lifting and get that offtrack bit growing into the finger out and cut and the nail rounded there, so it goes straight out like it should. Polysporin on it.

you dont take antibiotics for an ingrown nail it is not infected with bad stuff from outside your body. It is just reacting to the nail and swelling is a normal body reaction. Keep soaking it in hot water and squeeze the puss out. Use something or bite the sharp edge off or just leave it and after 3-4 days it will be fine.

antibiotics? hahahahahahahha

Waiting at the docs now. Good excuse to leave school early, at least.

I don't want to keep you in suspense so I will fill you in. A real cliff hanger ending.

They washed and dressed it. Two days of antibiotics, anti inflammatory and an antacid (Korean Drs always prescribe them for some reason). As suspected, really.

Fascinating. I know. Laughing

Right. Never take medication for infections. Pus for weeks on end is totally natural, and if it doesn't go away, just wave some incense. Laughing Good use with those question marks. Are you a valley girl? Does, like, every sentence, like, have to go up at the, like, end?

To the OP: Antibiotic cream (not pills) for once you cut the nail away from skin with a knife, and a tiny wad of cotton (to keep the nail propped up whilst it grows out) will do it. I had an ingrown toenail from a martial arts class years ago (I was doing a take down and the guy stomped on my foot accidentally), and it took a couple of weeks of religiously changing the cotton and ointment, but it's been fine ever since.

Wear sandals if possible. You're lucky you're in Asia! It's normal here to wear them indoors Very Happy

It isn't getting better by itself. Liver damage from antibiotics is extremely rare. Of course Drs make money from prescribing meds. A baker makes money from selling bread as well. Would you refer I lost my finger to gangrene? (Admittedly that outcome is extremely unlikely).

I am extremely choosey about what meds I take. Pus oozing from your finger is caused by bacteria. It stands to reason that an anti bacterial is a good course of action. Some illnesses, taking antibiotics is counter productive. I chewed someone out, the other day, about trying to acquire amoxicyllin for a sore throat. That is a virus, which would in no way resond to that drug.

In some ways I agree with you. I have been made worse off by seeking medical attention. But this is not one of those cases. Some things you can't just shake off, and modern medicine can be extremely helpful in aiding your recovery.

ㅋㅋ, hot tip. But it's a finger nail, not a toe nail. In grown finger nails are rare, according to my research. It's a big pain 'cos every time I bump it, jolts of pain shoot into my hand.

I've been trying to pry the nail up, but it is making it worse. Actually, that tactic worked on one side but it seemed to exacerbate the opposite side.

It's lame, because I never had problems with my hands when I was playing rugby and working construction, getting my hands ripped to pieces on a daily basis.

Ooh sorry I forgot that it was your finger. I was thinking about when it happened to me.

I hope it heals well. Best of luck!
