Where in Yongsan were you looking? at the I'Park (above the station)?
Go across the tracks ( the terminal building is the blue one as you look across from Yongsan station). If you look to the right of the terminal building you can see the place with the gigabyte sign on it. That is the seon-in plaza. The best place to look and usually the best prices.
Go in the left hand door and about 1/2 way down on your left side you will find a place that still stocks (new) 4:3 monitors.
You will also get better pricing on the wide ones (I just got one (Samsung B2030) for under 150k won.
I personally found that the bigger monitors were too big for desktop use unless you plan to use them for watching videos from substantially more than arms length.

I was looking in the area above the station and across the board they said only wide-screen were available. |

I've got that monitor in the link. I use it exclusively for TV/Movies, it's hooked up to my HTPC.
It must be possible to get one of those ones we use at school for next to nothing? Schools, govt depts, businesses etc must go through them like tp. |

| Why would you want a 4:3 monitor? It doesn't make sense. The footprint on a desk is no greater and as for media (movies, games, etc)...well, it is a 16:9 world now. |

I'm wondering about this too... Why do you want a square monitor? A human's field of vision is wider than it is tall. Unless you only have one eye, a square monitor doesn't make much sense. As has also been posted previously.... Wide screen monitors are less expensive and more widely available. Also, all current games, movies, tv programs, etc are designed for wide screens.
I'm all for personal preferences, but very curious what the reason could be. |

I guess I'm just used to the 4:3. The widescreens feel kinda short to me. As I'll be hooking it up to my netbook, and probably not using it much for movies, I thought I'd be able to find a 4:3 for a lower price, but I guess that isn't the case.
It's been pointed out to me that a widescreen would be better for my main use, word processing, anyways, so I think I'm coming around.
Now I'm thinking of buying one used, but I've read that the brightness diminishes over time. I can't find a consensus on how long until it's noticeable. Anyone have an idea of the life-span of an LCD monitor?
Rothbard: you're the second person to suggest getting one of the ones from school for real cheap. But I wouldn't know where to look(I work at a hagwon) |

You can get widescreens that rotate between landscape and portrait modes (which is just fantastic for word processing/coding/websurfing, etc). |
