http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2010-08-22/all-33-trapped-chilean-miners-are-found-alive-after-17-days-underground.html

Quote:
The workers were trapped in Cia. Minera Esteban Primera SAs San Jose mine in the Atacama region after an access tunnel caved in Aug. 5. Efforts to reach the miners through an airshaft were abandoned after another collapse. It may take another four months of drilling to retrieve them, Andres Sougarret, who is heading the rescue operation, said today.

Can you imagine being stuck in a mine, you and 32 other people, for 4 months? There's no fresh air down there and probably no toilet so I would imagine 33 miners relieving themselves everyday will cause a stink. No sunlight. No beds. No running water. No toilet paper. Where are they gonna put trash?

A typical mine is a pretty big place with lots of tunnels, airshafts and room. It's not just one small cave. And it's not like they aren't used to being underground.

I doubt they have caches of fresh water and dried food there.

Four months to get them out? Doesn't look good.

From what I heard on BBC they are able to get them food and water by some method. But surviving down there for 4 months, that really has to suck. I wonder if they will turn into those things from the Descent? Smile

They are worried about depression and other mental problems.

I say give them new porn daily and some privacy and they should make it through just fine.

You know, 4 months with 32 people doesn't seem nearly as bad as 32 months with 4 people.
