I plan to go home (US) for a month. I have a Korean iphone and would like to use it while I am there.

My wife called to get roaming rates for calls and while she was talking to the guy he said that wifi in the US will not work with the Korean iPhone. Is this true? If so, is it expensive to use America's iphone network to access the Internet? Thanks for any help!

The guy doesn't know what he is talking about. WiFI is WiFi wherever you go. It is the same as on your laptop or your ipod Touch.

You will need to find free, open wifi spots though. Starbucks and McDs have them, I think.

Right. Thanks! I knew I wasn't crazy! I used my iPod touch in Hong Kong and it was fine. I also use my laptop from America in Korea.

Maybe you're right and he meant be careful of any subscription wifi services. Anyway, thanks!

You should unlock your iPhone and just buy a sim card when you get to the US...

How to unlock the iPhone?

Try this:

Never tried this service myself but would be interested to know if it worked well for others with their K-iPhones.

A friend from Canada came a couple weeks ago and he said he couldn't get the WiFi to work here in Korea with his Canadian phone.

He tried everything. Even putting the phone in airplane mode with the Wifi enabled.

That is strange because my iPhone 3G (from the US) and iPad (obviously from the US) work fine on wifi here. Sounds to me like a PEBKAC situation. I'm not saying that your friend is stupid or not tech-savvy. However, to paraphrase another poster, "wifi is wifi is wifi." (of course, there are different flavors of wifi including 802.11a, 802.11b, 802.11g, 802.11b/g, and 802.11n)

Never pay for an iPhone unlock. All these guys are doing are capitalizing on the iPhone dev-team's hard work. You can always get the latest unlock from the dev-team free.

Exactly what i was thinking, any unlock/jailbreak site is going to be a scam, these tools are free. You can find information about current tools/news at this site:

I have jailbroke an iphone and ipod before, but I'd rather not restore my ipod to the defaults and lose everything I have on it now. I've owned pretty much every generation ipod, but have yet to figure out how to create a good working backup that will save everything. Besides that, I will only be there for a month, so it probably isn't worth it to do this.

If I WERE to jailbreak and unlock, how would I go about getting a sim card in the US? Wouldn't I need to register with some kind of phone company (AT&T) in order to use their service? Can I get a card for only 1 month?

Thanks again for all the help.

Actually the new jailbreak doesn't delete any of your data. It simply exploits a bug and makes it jailbroken without having to reinstall firmware. You just point safari to jailbreakme.com and "slide to jailbreak".

Anyways yes its easy to get a temporary sim card. When I went back home I got a prepaid one from radioshack for ATT
