I'm thinking about going to Sokcho for the weekend and I want to find out what there is to do in the area and if there are any decent places to stay on or near the beach. I'm not looking for anything expensive. A nice love motel will do, though I would prefer one with a tub or jacuzzi. Also, is there anything interesting to do fairly close by? We will only have Saturday and part of Sunday so won't be able to go too far away.

Depends what you're into. There's a beach, and a fat-ass mountain range.

You can just hang out with koreans and foreigners on the beach - anyone

There's an 808 step trail up, and it ain't easy, and if you're not up to the epic climbs (there's a 10+ hour trek too), then just go up the cart thing up a mountain and view stuff from there. If your eyes are good you can spot a waterfall. I think you can get to the waterfall too. There's 2 or 3 around.

But I strongly recommend heavily trying the 808 steps, the view is amazing, and the achievement is a memory for life. Here's me rather smug and mi-gookey at the top; http://www.box.net/shared/6e47vvr5a5

808 steps? How long did that take?

For me time lost all meaning. Possibly several days. But likely about an hour. I wonder what they define as steps though, some parts are cliff edges as far as I'm concerned.

I went down to Seokcho two weekends ago by car. Took about three hours to get there.
Stopped at a rafting/bungee jump place on the way (just follow the signs on the road) and did the rafting. Good fun for 25,000W. Bungee was only 40,000W but the line was long.

Stayed right on the beach. Actually wouldn't recommend this beach. Not that big. Crowded. Not too exciting at night.

Went to Naksan the next day. Would suggest staying there. Bigger beach. More places to stay, eat, etc.

If you have a car, keep working your way down the east coast and just check out the beaches you see signs for. The best beach we found was about 15 minutes south east of Naksan. Less people. Peaceful.

Drive home on Sunday night took seven hours from the Seoraksan parking lot to Sinchon. Not fun but the weekend was awesome. Have fun!
