But even after controlling for nearly all imaginable variables - socioeconomic status, level of physical activity, number of close friends, quality of social support and so on - the researchers (a six-member team led by psychologist Charles Holahan of the University of Texas at Austin) found that over a 20-year period, mortality rates were highest for those who had never been drinkers, second-highest for heavy drinkers and lowest for moderate drinkers.

Great quote by Sinatra. I suppose I'm royally screwed then. Damn my alchohol allergy!! That being said, it is kind of fun to people watch on Sunday mornings as they struggle to the shops for eggs and whatever hangover cure they're looking for.

Moderate drinking is best according to the study -- but we're talking 1-3 glasses of wine most likely with your meal -- not jacking up a bottle of hard liquor + beer.

There must be a box somewhere which contains stories such as this one... "a recent study this", "a recent study that". The one about drinking comes up every few years and must be at least two or three decades old. Just a bunch of lab rats who got caught drinking at work and convinced the prof that they're doing a study on the effects of alcohol.

If you want to read some truly surprising news, get a copy of "Genome" by Matt Ridley. Here's one for starters and statistics lovers: People with high cholesterol have a 14% higher chance of dying from heart disease, but people with low cholesterol have a 25% higher chance of dying a violent death Shocked . Have a double-bacon-cheeseburger while you think about the implications of that!

One must also wonder why alcohol still gets so much positive publicity in the media but tobacco doesn't. I'm sure there is some benefit of moderate smoking somewhere, even on the embryonic development (fetus hardening or something like that).

A glass of alcohol increases the good cholesterol HDL among other cardiovascular benefits. But more than 2 drinks a day is associated with many illnesses. HUNDREDS of studies show a J-curve distribution of mortality, with modrate drinkers at the lowest part of the J, abstainers at the first part that loops up and heavy drinkers at the top part. Scientists and doctors know this because the evidence is overwhelming. Why is another matter. It may simply be about the typical habits of moderate drinkers to be moderate, to not do too much of anything, including their drinking. The reasons are unclear. That drinking a glass of alcohol is better for your health that abstaining is obvious to all but the moralist ignorance of those who don't know and don't care to know the facts. We are not talking about scientists disagreeing, as indeed studies suggest all kind of wacky things. But in the case of moderate drinking, the body of research is overwhelmingly clear. What makes THIS study surprising is in finding that the J-curve distribution didn't hold, that it was more U-shaped, with heavy drinkers actually edging out abstainers, where most studies show that abstaining reduces mortality compared to heavy drinking.
