So does anyone know if immigration requires the RCMP background check or do our local checks work for the new requirements this January? I know that the local checks (like the Winnipeg one) go through the national database but whether immigration will accept it or not is a different story.

I recently went to the immigration website and it gave a link to the RCMP site.
o Consulates located in Korea cannot issue proof of criminal records to individuals currently.
o Korean government requires a proof of criminal records issued by the relevant nation�s government for its citizens to use for any number of international activities, such as employment. It will accept records issued by the federal, provincial, state authorities.
※ The document is valid for six months form Criminal background Check issuing date. Please check the local government resources to find out how you can obtain one.
※ If obtained through consulates in Korea, please refer to the list below or the local webpage.

If anyone can clarify it, it would be greatly appreciated.

As well, has anyone had experience getting their fingerprints done for the RCMP check in Korea? Is it easy to get it done in a small city or should I just head over the Seoul if I need it? Thanks!

I would suggest going through the RCMP to be safe. However, being that you are outside Canada, dealing with the RCMP can be ridiculous from my own personal experience. Long story short, after dealing with some RCMP shite I wound up getting a Winnipeg CRC and then had my dad exchange it for an RCMP CRC. I was a BC resident out of the country and the Korean consulate in Vancouver wouldn't stamp an out of province crc. I was doing this from NZ.

Let me get this straight. If you in Canada you have to get the Korean consolate to stamp it? Can't you just bring the Winnipeg police check here and have the Canadian embassy stamp it?

Sorry, no idea on about the consulate thing. That is what is said on the website. I hope not, what a PITA.

I got my fingerprints done at a cop shop in NZ. But like I said I'd go with the Winnipeg police crc and trade it for the RCMP one. The details on getting a RCMP CRC overseas can be found here.

according to the person I talked to at immi the other day if you had an RCMP check done already you are fine and don't need another one. It is only if you have a true check one or only provincial.
