| The Koreans in the article need to be slapped- hard. "I felt ridiculed." Really? A drunk guy reading the news makes you feel ridiculed? "I was so disappointed." Well seeing as you are Korean and considering the role alcohol plays in Korean society, you must have felt constantly disappointed from the moment of your birth until the present time. This disappointment will continue unti the momentl you draw your last breath. |
It's hilarious seeing your hatred for Koreans and Korea in general. Why are you in Korea? And if you want to pretend you're no longer in Korea, time to move on to a different forum.
Do you think there wouldn't be any outrage, if someone in the 'States pulled the same crap?
 |
Because I think that two comments in a news article are ridiculous and way off base, I hate Korea and all Koreans? Wow. You are the one with issues (of an apologist nature).I would find those comments equally as stupid if uttered by non Koreans.
And if this happened back home, his bosses would be outraged but I cant see any listener taking it as a personal affront and say " He ridiculed me."
And what is this "if you want to pretend you are not in Korea" stuff? |

Targeting the people who made the comments was fair game. But when you moved on to making comments about Korean society then yes...I'd say it's fair to assume you have issues with Korea and Koreans

Yes if people had said these comments about being ridiculed back home it would be equally as stupid. And it would be also be as equally as stupid to make some similar over-generalized comment about the society back home. |

Why shouldn't the poster have issues with Korea and koreans? I do too. I have issues with The US also. I have issues with you. You have issues with him obviously. Why do you keep pointing out such inane stuff? |

This.
If someone shows up on a late night talk show obviously sauced but makes a bunch of jokes that get people howling in laughter no one cares. If that same person gets violent, drowsy-stumbling, or otherwise makes a fool out of themselves then its an issue.
I love how people assume that a few offended netizens represent the opinion of the Korean public as a whole.
Many Koreans are Conservative Christians who don't drink. If they ridicule the guy, they may be uptight judgmental bores, but they aren't being hypocrites like is being suggested.
I love how posters on Dave's always refer to 'drunken ajosshi culture' as being Korean culture, ignoring the millions of Conservative Christian folk here who have completely different views on drinking, smoking, prostitutes, spousal abuse, racism, and other things. |

Because a couple of people do not represent all of society. The people who made the stupid comments are fair game because of said comments. To draw sweeping conclusions from that to include all of the society is not all that much brighter though. Come on this is fairly elementary logic, why do I have to explain this to you?
And no I don't have issues with Mr. conrad2. It would seem that of all the people in this thread...only you have issues with me. |

| Its not a generalization to state that Korea has serious issues with alcohol- not just actual consumption but the attitudes towards alcohol consumption as well. |

Exactly. Many, many studies show that Koreans are amongst the heaviest drinkers in the world. So to generalise about the whole society (or rather as is the case here - to make conclusions based on statistics garnered from the behaviours of said whole society - is completely supportable.
Why this needs explaining; I have no idea. |

Korea is also the number 2 sender of missionaries. Is it fair to call Korea a conservative Evangelical nation?
The danger with statistics is not getting the greater context. Many Koreans love to booze and booze hard.
Many Koreans are teetotalers who stridently object to the alcohol culture.
Both are true. |

It needs explaining because the facts don't back you up. Korea isn't even in the top 15 of the heaviest drinkers in the world.

Would you like to produce these many many studies you claim to have seen so we can all compare? |

From the WHO - please see page 53 (page number of actual page, not pdf browser)
Korea = 4th largest per capita consumer of alcohol in the World.
There are facts and then there's what TUM writes.
Which do I trust?
Meh.... I'll go with those facts! |

Fair point.
But he also wrote an article about a waygook who himself happens to write annoyingly bad articles for a daily. Maybe bad writers are attracted to each other in order to destroy each other. |

Those 'milions' must be having a rough time living here, seeing the loutness and debauchery that is so visible here.
Do they lecture drunks passed out on the sidewalk as well? The foreigner is an easy target for the Korean keyboard warriors.
