Well a buddy let me know that the PS3 has finally been successfully hacked. No need for soldering or using a screwdriver. It's a dongle that plugs into the USB port and tricks the PS3 to thinking it is being used by a developer. Of course Sony will try to block this with a firmware update but for now it works. Here is the link with some Youtube videos for proof:

I highly doubt this will continue to work. Sony's been so freaking hardcore on preventing modding that I've got a strong feeling this will be useless in a month or two and you'll just have a $170 USB on your hands. |

True, I'm skeptical too, yet they say the unit is able to update it too, though it's a bit of a risk for that amount of money (though remember that's Australian dollars, but still). What you could do is buy it now, borrow every game you like from friends, etc. back them up then if/when Sony sends out a firmware update, update it and see how it goes from there. If you "back up" 4-5 games alone, that will pay for the cost of the usb. Just something to think about. |

If they keep this up Sony is going to sell one more PS3...to me! I'm a bit angry at MS cause my 360 red-lighted and died. I'd be more than happy to switch to PS3 if I could load ISOs.
Let's keep hoping! |

Yes, you can copy games to and load games off of the USB device.....However, I think you still need to have the original game in the drive. To me it is kind of useless as it is, but we're all waiting for updates. |

You don't need the original game in the drive...that's what was shown in one of the vids in the link...Rachet and Clank was not in the drive, but he was able to load it with backup manager and play it from the games menu. You have to have the original(borrowed from a friend?) to use it with backup manager, and I think a person is limited in how many games they can "backup" by the size of their PS3 hdd, but I'm not sure about all the details yet. I just might be buying a PS3 and one of the dongledohickies myself as I'm still unable to resurrect my dead/modded 360. |

apparently, there is now a ps jailbreak clone out...the kit you need only costs $30USD...although that site is currently out of stock, they expect to have more in a couple of weeks.
p.s. using games from an external hard drive will only work up to 4GB, but games on the internal hdd will be able to be larger, so I've read.
p.p.s. not all games are working, so I've also read.

Thanks for the link. Looks like a lot of the games on there are working on external drives even though they're much larger than 4GB...guess there's going to be lots of trial-and-error for some time to come. |

Give it a month and I think it will be totally hacked. Hopefully the dongle price will come down A LOT.
But then again the Xbox slim is coming out in Korea in about a week. Xecuter almost has it hacked, too...but still, I'm pretty pissed at MS 'cause I lost money to the RROD. |

Yah, but I got it used and only got 3 months out of the thing. It's the risks you take, but I'd sooner get a PS3 now than an Xbox. But I guess I'll end up going for whatever is cheaper and easier.
I'll wait a month or two and see how the scene goes. |
