Strictly speaking, cals in > cal out => weight gain. It kinda is like an ATM in some sense (that or you've done something amazing, getting around that pesky conservation of energy thing, and should have a movie made about u)

This is a satisfying conclusion, but it doesn't seem to hold up in practice. How many people do you know who lost weight doing this, and subsequently kept it off? Almost no one does, unless they substitute carbs for fat.

Carbs act to spike your blood sugar. You will be hungry within a short time eating carbs as opposed to an equivalent amount of fat. The end result is, even though, fat might have more calories, in the long term you eat less as fat is more hunger satiating.

Either it gets used (energy, heat etc) both while you're awake and asleep, or it gets converted into fat. (I guess it can also make for some great soap once scooped out) Carbs are (what) 3-4 cal/g, while fats are 9 cal/g? Energy that isn't used is converted to either glycogen or fat. Fats do tend to weigh less than muscle, but eventually...

All calories aren't the same.

About the "since 30 yrs ago," do you remember the serving sizes they got back in the states (which it happens that I REALLY miss)? Or the "coke w/ every meal" policy ....everywhere? (wait, forgive- i mean diet!) Or that smelly dude comfortably taking up 2 seats on the bus cuz everyone else's crammed in the opposite end?

The sugar is the culprit, not the serving size of fat. The people you are talking about, have likely been following the prevailing dietary advie, ie "Don't eat fat."

I have never meet a vegetarian who wasn't irritable and depressed.

I just think it's weird that basically every food, exercise, or other health (or lack of it) related thread ends up having this same discussion.

Is it surprising that a thread entitled "This Is Why You're Fat!" Would contain discussion on nutrition?

Every body is different. Some bodies do better with more meat. Some do better with carbohydrates. Some do better with nuts and seeds. Talk to your doctor or nutritionist, experiment a bit, and when you feel (and your doctor deems you) healthiest, that's the diet for you.

Senior--I mean Rothbard--does better with animal fats. He loves his diet, and his body seems to respond well to it. That's awesome for him. It sounds delicious as well. Unfortunately, when I consume meats that aren't my once-or-twice-a-week seafood servings, my digestion is crap and I get dermatitis.

My body prefers plant fats (such as avocado, nuts, seeds, olives, etc), some seafood, loads of colorful vegetables, only a small amount of dark-colored fruit (but still some), and a small but important portion of rough whole-grain carbs (maybe 5 servings a week tops).

There are countless variations. I think that the most important thing is to truly know what works best for your individual body type.

If you want to be thin and healthy, calorie restriction will not help you.

.

So people who die of starvation are fat?

If you don't eat enough the body will dip into its reserves of muscle and fat to make up the difference. After a few days it will slow down the metabolism which means you need less calories than you did before. Obviously this can negate the effects of caloric restriction.

But if you require 2000 calories per day to maintain weight and you go down to 1000 calories you will lose weight. Trouble is a lot of that will be muscle and muscle burns fat. So when you go off the diet not only has your metabolism slowed down, you've also lost some ability to burn fat. So when you start eating normally again you put on even more fat then you did before due to a slower metabolism and less muscle to burn fat.

This is basic science. Anyone who thinks that calories don't count is ignoring the laws of science and thermodynamics. Any doctor will tell you the same.

If you eat 10,000 calories a day and burn 4000, you will get fat

If you eat 2,000 calories a day and require 3000 you will lose weight.

To keep your metabolism up exercise regularly.
