I managed to get a nasty bacterial infection under my skin from a tiny scratch and have been on amoxicillin 3 times a day for 13 days. I feel much better and the site of the infections looks like it has healed. Apart from what will probably amount to a permanent scar and inflammation that the doctor said will last for months, it basically looks like it has cleared up. Now it's the side effects of the antibiotic that are making me miserable. I went back to the doctor and he prescribed more medicine for the side effects plus 4 more days of antibiotics. Yes, I know I'm not a doctor. Yes, I know it might be really stupid to stop taking the antibiotic. But 17 days? I've never taken an antibiotic for that long. I'm not saying he's a bad doctor. I think I've gotten very good treatment from him. Maybe he's being overly cautious? Are antibiotics generally prescribed for that length of time here?

A friend of mine had a general, non specific bacterium related std. Docs in UK tested him several tiems and said there was nothing wrong with him.

Korean doc had him on handfulls of antbios a day for over 3 months to the point where he was nauseus, close to fainting and barely able to walk....

Illness specific.

If you have something that is resistant it also takes MUCH longer and often with higher doses to treat.

Staphylococcus aureus is another one that can, if it gets deep enough, cause very real problems and takes a LONG TIME to treat (I had an ex-GF who had a staph infection that took months to successfully treat - back home).

Species of the genus Streptococcus can also cause problems (beyond the common sore throat) that can take a long time to effectively treat.

Also, some bacterial infections no longer respond to antibiotic treatment (eg: Necrotizing fasciitis).

It's cellulitis, which according to WebMD is normally caused by staph or strep. *Sigh* Guess it's back to heavy doses of amoxicillin along with even heavier doses of yogurt. Crying or Very sad

On the bright side, yours seems to be curable without an operation - at least those nasty invaders aren't resistant to antibiotics.

It's better that they subscribe it for a long period so you actually get well instead of giving you pills for 3 days which will basically just make the bacteria more resistant to antibiotics. If you have first started with antibiotics, you should finish the cure even though you are feeling fine.

Usually in Korea, it's the opposite way around - it's hard to get docs to prescribe antibiotics for any real length of time.
