This post if to give those that are new some advice! One general rule about Korea and especially with Schools/Hagwons is DON'T ASSUME. To give an example you are going to school and it is raining cats and dogs and small Matizes, in your mind you think that hey very few students will show up today with such bad weather - so hopefully easy day. Bam! once you get there every student is there the only difference is the half of them are wet , a quarter are whining that they have no umbrella and the rest are all anxious because they have been cooped up all day.

So what does this have to do with Chusok. This year Chusok falls on a Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Now many teachers will assume and the new ones especially that since three days of the five work days will off why not make Monday and Friday off and make it all really long holiday of 9 days. So to those that hope to get a long holiday there is good chance you WILL NOT get it. Expect to be at work on Monday and Friday!

My sympathies to those that have to work!

Good Luck

I think I'm getting the week off.

But who knows?

Korea: Expect the worst, don't hope for the best.

I think that's a lot more realistic than "Sparkling"

I prefer to prepare for the worst, and hope for the best...no matter where I am.

Now THAT's "sparkling"... Very Happy

Who would assume this? It isn't the case in our home countries that you would get the two other days off.

I'm getting Monday, Friday of though. Laughing

I DO know a few hagwon teachers who are getting one of the days off work, and several public school teachers who are getting one of the days off work. All of the other hagwon teachers have to work both days.

All of the other public school teachers are getting the entire week.

I dislike the sarcastic use of the word "Sparkling" on here. I would like to propose a new catch phrase for this website. It reads like this "If home or anywhere else was "sparkling" I'd be there instead of Korea"

Proposal considered and rejected. The standard Dave's use of 'sparkling' will remain intact.

How many of the people that use it are actually familiar with its genesis?

My school is closed on both Monday and Friday, but, for me to take off, it comes out of my vacation time.

I'm fine with that, though. My best friend in the states is visiting!

True as back home people might expect to work but... take any other holiday like Christmas or Easter or July 4th. And they where on a Thursday most people would expect Friday off. Heck if it was on a Sunday people still expect to get an extra day off. The reason is that is the way holidays are supposed to go.

This little poster right here. I still remember the commercials I saw back in the US and giggled about them knowing the truth.
Sure Korea is nice at times, but it's never been commercial nice.

Then again you should see the propaganda they spout for towns in the US.
"Virgina is for Lovers" comes to mind.
Nithing says loving like ditry beaches, inbred yokels, and tobbaco!

EDIT:
When a major holiday landed on a Thursday or Sunday all I expected was for everyone in the shop to be hungover Friday or Monday.
Never had a job where we got "extra" days off just because of the placement of the national holiday.
I remember one boss trying to steal our 4th of July because we were behind on a contract (because he wouldnt repair one of the main lathes).

Lucky little me I guess.

assumed we were getting one of the days off. Asked about it and the director said no. We formed a little teacher's union and told him we aren't coming on Friday, he cancelled classes.

Problem solved.

Have the work the Sat before Chuseok but Sun-Thurs off.
