I may take the leap on the latest Kindle ($189) and the Amazon site says they ship to SK no problems. I'm curious, however if anyone knows the hit I'll take at customs? Shipping isn't so bad from Amazon but customs is where I'm worried I'll get nailed.....
There must be something for Korean customs on the net for this?

Thanks for the link to the customs site again.
Unfortunately, it's written in Englishee legalese and hard to understand.
Also, I'm assuming it falls under the same category as all electronic goods......anybody's guess still. |

I suggest marking it as a "gift" (I believe you can do that at checkout on Amazon), but you may have to mail it to a coworker or at least a different name than your billing name (and possibly address).
I haven't actually tried this, but it might get you out of any sort of customs responsibility. |

I don't know when they started but if you go through the
Amazon site from the start page, you'll see a what country type button. It will now take you to a S Korea info page that says something like "were now happy to ship to Korea" or something similar. It changed in the recent past though as you used to get a sorry message as recently as a month ago. |

I don't know when they started but if you go through the
Amazon site from the start page, you'll see a what country type button. It will now take you to a S Korea info page that says something like "were now happy to ship to Korea" or something similar. It changed in the recent past though as you used to get a sorry message as recently as a month ago. |
They out-sourced the international shipping to save them the hassle of dealing with customs issues, but enable them to expand market share.
International travelers are much more likely to buy a device like the Kindle, it's a demographic too big to skip out on. |

Yeah on some level this is tailor made for those living and moving around internationally a lot. It's probably why I'd spend the extra fifty as well on the LG service.
Any specific info on the damage done by SK customs to get one of these through there? |

| My Korean co-teacher ordered the new Kindle and said she had to pay some sort of tariff/duty on it. Around 50K won. Can anyone else confirm? |

Yeah, but the Kindle with slightly better LG service is $189. I don't know how well customs tracks specific products but certainly Amazon isn't gonna "mark it down" for me to get it through customs!! |

I can't confirm - it's why I started this thread trying to find out the specifics and hoping someone who recently bought one could share. Why not confirm with your Korean co-teacher and let us know which model she bought also?
50K won puts a serious hurt on the price I must say. It does piss me off a bit, the degree to which these tariffs hurt people trying to mail stuff in. It's not like the Kindle is competing with a Korean equivalent. |

They probably flag all amazon boxes for inspection. I've gotten an xbox slim and multiple ipods through with no hassle, probably because they packaging was non-descript. |
