hi
has anyone applied for, is in the process of studying for, or completed an english literature ma at one of the seoul universities, yonsei, korea, sagang, etc..
im feeling like a couple of years study at one of these places would be a great break from the hogwon.
im not into the tesol or applied liguistics courses but wouldn't mind a literature ma.
if anyone has info. i'd be much obliged. i wouldn't mind scoring a university postion in the fullness of time as ive decided to commit myself to korea.
mostly i want to know if a literature ma, apart from the academic merit, will help my work situation.
cheers

I'm not one to do this kind of response but I figure I'd beat people to it and get it out the way...

'You clearly need it. No capitals! Sheesh'

i'm aware of that. i was only intending to get replies to my question. by the way, both of you sentences have woeful grammatical errors. a sentence doesn't end with three full stops, and i don't think that sheesh is a word.

Are you sure you can work in a Korean Uni. with a degree from a Korean Uni.? A year or two ago there was a story of a guy not getting a visa because his degree was from Korea instead of an English speaking country.

Not sure if that would be applicable since you obviously already have a BA, but something you might want to check out first.

I suspect that doing a Masters in English lit in Korea, particularly if it's not at one of the SKY schools, could backfire and damage your job prospects both in and out of Korea. An English lit degree from an English speaking country would have a far better reputation after all. If you're looking to get out of the hagwon game for a bit and go back to school, why not leave Korea to do so?

if you want to do it just out of pure interest, then fine. but don't expect any career or academic benefits from it whatsoever. as a foreigner in korea, it makes sense to study korean, korean studies, asian studies, asian economy/politics/international relations, ie. anything relating to korean or asian topics. but english literature?
an english literature ma (even from the best of universities) isn't a great investment from a financial perspective. i would guess that getting one from a korean university is even less helpful.
so, if you just want to study literature, do it. but don't expect to get more money or a better job.

You want to teach EFL courses at the university level, but instead of studying teaching methodology, SLA, and applied linguistics, you want to wax philosophical in lit crit courses for two years? This doesn't seem like "committing yourself to Korea" to me. Look at it from an employer's position: So, anbrainblasta, why should we hire you again?

An MA-TESOL will pwn an MA-Lit in the EFL job market every time. You might score a position, but it won't be at a good university.

Your degree needs to be from an English speaking country if you want to be granted an E-2 visa, that is what my University told me. I had to use my BA degree to get my visa processed because my MA degree is not from an English speaking country. That said, this only has to do with your visa being processed, not the ability to be hired by a University.
