The last big quake in NZ was 1931 says the middle article 'the day the earth shook'.
4am is a helluva time to be shaken out of bed. One fatality (earthquake was 7 on the scale), a heart attack.
I've never thought of NZ as an earthquake prone zone. Do they have any disasters usually? |

It was lucky it was at 4am. If it had been midday then there could have been a much higher injury and fatality count.
Floods, volcanoes, lahas, earthquakes, the occasional hurricane. Fortunately our civil defense is quite good. |

I'm just waiting until Tokyo goes under.
Placed on THREE fault lines all pushing against each other, increasing pressure every day for the last 80 years. It's gonna snap soon.
Last time it went off, 80 years ago, it completely flattened the place. 150,000 dead, billions of dollars of damage.
This time it's over 80 years (the average) already, and it will cause damage in the trillions of dollars. Doom! 2012! Abandon hope all ye who enter here! |

| It was fun to wake up to the earthquake in the wee small hours. Tremors are still happening - one of 4.5 at 12.35 this afternoon. New Brighton is apparently badly damaged and quite a few buildings downtown. Avonside also. No schools open until Wednesday at the earliest!! |

I used to live in Wellington and Fairlie. Plenty of small shocks in Wellington - but we had a real thumper in Fairlie (when everyone was sleeping). I woke up and thought - man - the house is really shaking. We didn't get out of bed - and it was only later that morning that I realised that there had only been a thin layer of pinex roofing board between us and heavy concrete roofing tiles. A lucky escape.
I hope everyone in Christchurch is OK. Earthquakes are no fun. |

Most of Chch is fine and no fatalities reported as yet; some very close calls though. New Brighton is reportedly up to the ankles in sewage after the pipes burst and older brick buildings through Chch seem to be the worst hit. My house was only built early this year and no damage. Not even a book knocked off the shelf but perhaps that has more to do with the clay soil and more solid underlying layers beneath my suburb. A mate of mine may have to have his entire house pulled down - his chimney collapsed and the walls move if touched. Tremors still happening - the latest one was 4.2 at 3.34pm. Very true, including and probably most importantly the civil defense is good. I went through a very bad flood in Invercargill in the early 80's and earthquakes are common in Southland as well.
There's a funny couple of notices on the outside wall of the Invercargill Airport.. 197? level of the One Hundred year flood. Then about 300 mm higher level of the 198? flood 
I did my Uni time in ChCh, so I'm just rapt all my friends are safe and well. NZ gets slagged off for poorly insulated houses but being Earthquake proof is a tad more important I'd argue |

I remember my Dad going down to help our friends clean up after that flood. A cat was missing until it was apparently discovered floating down the hall on an ironing board.
I think if a 7.0 earthquake hit Wellington it would be screwed, what with the hills and the one motorway in and out..  |

| At 10.48am today there was a 5.2 quake only 90km from Hastings. |
