http://www.telegraph.co.uk/earth/earthnews/7778917/Royal-Society-to-publish-guide-on-climate-change-to-counter-claims-of-exaggeration.html

Quote:
The most prestigious group of scientists in the country was forced to act after fellows complained that doubts over man made global warming were not being communicated to the public.

In particular they were unhappy that the long term effects of greenhouse gases were being oversimplified.

Lord Martin Rees, President of the Royal Society, admitted that the case for man-made global warming has been exaggerated in the past.

He emphasised that the basic science remains sound but agreed to issue guidance so that it better reflects the uncertainties.

Climate change is a hugely important issue but the public debate has all too often been clouded by exaggeration and misleading information," he said. "We aim to provide the public with a clear indication of what is known about the climate system, what we think we know about it and, just as importantly, the aspects we still do not understand verywell."

I thought the science was settled.. Boy the language is changed

Is this headline misleading? I still don't know what to think on all this.

'Climategate' inquiry mostly vindicates scientists

By RAPHAEL G. SATTER, Associated Press Writer Wed Jul 7, 1:42 pm ET

LONDON An independent report into the leak of hundreds of e-mails from one of the world's leading climate research centers on Wednesday largely vindicated the scientists involved, saying they acted honestly and that their research was reliable.

But the panel of inquiry, led by former U.K. civil servant Muir Russell, did chide scientists at the University of East Anglia's Climatic Research Unit for failing to share their data with critics.

"We find that their rigor and honesty as scientists are not in doubt," Russell said. "But we do find that there has been a consistent pattern of failing to display the proper degree of openness."
...
They caused a sensation when they were published online in November. The stolen correspondence captured researchers speaking in scathing terms about their critics, discussing ways to stonewall skeptics of man-made climate change, and talking about how to freeze opponents out of peer-reviewed journals.
...
The carefully worded report mostly defended the scientists from attacks, saying there was no evidence Jones had destroyed evidence that he knew critics were seeking, or that he or others perverted the peer review process.

It also largely excused the intemperate language that helped make the e-mails such an Internet sensation, saying that the more extreme exchanges such as when one scientist cheers the death of a skeptic and another jokingly threatened to beat a prominent critic were typical of often over-the-top electronic missives friends and colleagues trade every day.

But the report did dole out some criticism, saying that Jones clearly pushed others to delete e-mails that he thought might provide ammunition to skeptics, and that the University of East Anglia had been "unhelpful" in dealing with Freedom of Information Act requests an issue Britain's data-protection watchdog has also flagged.

Importantly, the report also revisited the now infamous e-mail exchange between Jones and a colleague in which the climatologist refers to a "trick" used to "hide the decline" in a chart used to track global temperatures.
...
Jones' critics were only partially mollified. Canadian economics professor Ross McKitrick welcomed the conclusion that the 1999 chart was misleading. But he still said that the inquiry seemed "unduly concerned to downplay the problems they found" and offer excuses for the researchers involved.

University of East Anglia Vice-Chancellor Edward Acton claimed that the report had "completely exonerated" Jones, who is returning to the Climatic Research Unit as director of research.

But Benny Feiser, who runs the skeptic-leaning Global Warming Policy Foundation, said there was strong evidence that legitimate requests for information had been repeatedly stifled.

"I don't think the university can just claim that this is a vindication," he said. He promised his own inquiry into the matter, to publish its report in August.

The headline is true. I believe two other investigations exonerated the researchers of deliberate distortion. Of course, they should have been more open with their data.

The reason it seems excuses were offered for the researchers is because the researchers are flawed human beings under attack by disingenuous denialists.*

*Skepticism and Denialism are very different.

While Mann may have been exonerated by his university (big surprise there Rolling Eyes) he's not out of the woods yet.

http://www.readthehook.com/blog/index.php/2010/04/29/oh-mann-cuccinelli-targets-uva-papers-in-climategate-salvo/

And if the report (mentioned above by Mr. bacasper) found Jones had clearly pushed others to delete e-mails...I don't see how that's complete exoneration.
Guess it's natural for the AGW proponents to stick together. The more things change the more they stay the same.

Left-wing Env. Scientist Bails Out Of Global Warming Movement: Declares it a 'corrupt social phenomenon...strictly an imaginary problem of the 1st World middleclass'

Exclusive New Video: Calls cap-and-trade an 'horrendous scam' -- Joins other left of center scientific and activist dissenters

Monday, July 26, 2010By Marc Morano Climate Depot

Physicist Dr. Denis Rancourt, a former professor and environmental science researcher at the University of Ottawa, has officially bailed out of the man-made global warming movement.

In a hard-hitting and exclusive new exclusive video just released by Climate Depot, Dr. Rancourt declares that the entire man-made global warming movement is nothing more than a corrupt social phenomenon. It is as much psychological and social phenomenon as anything else, Rancourt, who has published peer-reviewed research, explained in a June 8, 2010 essay. (Rancourt's email: [email protected])

Watch Rancourt video here.

I argue that by far the most destructive force on the planet is power-driven financiers and profit-driven corporations and their cartels backed by military might; and that the global warming myth is a red herring that contributes to hiding this truth. In my opinion, activists who, using any justification, feed the global warming myth have effectively been co-opted, or at best neutralized, Rancourt said.

Global warming is strictly an imaginary problem of the First World middleclass, he stated.

Environmental censorship

Rancourt's dissent on man-made climate fears has not set well with many of his fellow green friends. When I tell environmental activists that global warming is not something to be concerned about, they attack me -- they shun me, they do not allow me to have my materials published in their magazines, Rancourt explained to Climate Depot.

Rancourt bluntly examines why his fellow environmentalists are wrapped up in promoting climate alarm. (Note: Rancourt also ridicules environmental concern over acid rain and the ozone hole. See below)

They look for comfortable lies that they can settle into and alleviate the guilt they feel about being on privileged end of the planet -- a kind of survivors guilt. A lot of these environmentalists are guilt laden individuals who need to alleviate the guilt without taking risks, he said. They are weekend activists...looking for lies to hitch onto.

The modern environmental move has hijacked itself by looking for an excuse to stay comfortable and stay away from actual battle. Ward Churchill has called this pacifism as pathology, he explained. If you are really concerned about saving world's forests or habitat destruction, then fight against habitat destruction, don't go off in tenuous thing about co2 concentration in the atmosphere. Actually address the question; otherwise you are weakening your effect as an activist.

Gore's film makes him 'ill'

Rancourt openly expresses his hostility for former Vice President Al Gore's 2006 documentary An Inconvenient Truth.

I felt ill walking out of the theatre. It's terrible. It does not respect the intelligence of the viewer. The film does not acknowledge people can think for themselves at all, Rancourt said.

Rancourt lamented how environmentalists could just gobble this up and agree with [Gore's film] in a non critical fashion.

Gore strikes me as someone working for someone -- as someone who will financially benefit from this. He does not give me impression of someone who genuinely cares about environmental or social justice.

US Government admits satellite temperature readings degraded. All data taken offline in shock move. Global warming temperatures may be 10 to 15 degrees too high.

Caught in the centre of the controversy is the beleaguered taxpayer funded National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). NOAAs Program Coordinator, Chuck Pistis has now confirmed that the fast spreading story on the respected climate skeptic blog is true.

Sometimes diagrams are drawn which show the radiation from the Earth's surface rising into the sky and being reflected off of the atmosphere (or clouds, or greenhouse gasses). This too is nonsense. The radiation was not reflected, it was absorbed and different radiation was subsequently emitted.

Climate panel must be purged

by Matt Ridley

Quote:
So I have concluded that global warming will most probably be a fairly minor problem - at least compared with others such as poverty and habitat loss - for nature as well as people.

After watching the ecologically and economically destructive policies enacted in its name (biofuels, wind power), I think we run the risk of putting a tourniquet around our collective necks to stop a nosebleed.

Matt Ridley hits the nail on the head.

This is an example of why I cannot cope the alarmist rubbish anymore.

Quote:
According to economist Richard Tol, one part of the 2007 report (produced by Working Group 2) systematically overstated the adverse effects of climate change, while another section (written by Working Group 3) systematically understated the costs of emissions reduction.

Indur Goklany, an independent science scholar, likewise noticed that the report had quoted a study that estimated the number of people at increased risk of reduced water shortage in the future as a result of climate change, but omitted to mention the same source's estimate of the number of people at decreased risk.

The latter number was larger in all cases, so that "by the 2080s the net global population at risk declines by up to 2.1 billion people".

Smoke and mirrors.

It can't be too far in the future when catastrophic climate change is given the same weight as astrology and relegated to the entertainment section of newspapers. Mr. Green

Submitted by Doug L. Hoffman on Thu, 09/02/2010 - 14:49

Quote:
More plainly put, making simplifying assumptions about nature has led to an over estimation of carbon dioxide's impact on temperature. As experienced modelers will tell you, simplifying assumptions can be the death of any simulation. Here is more proof that the climate models used by the IPCC and other climate researchers don't have a chance in hell of getting future climate change correct. The closer science looks at the real world processes involved in climate regulation the more absurd the IPCC's computer driven fairy tale appears. Instead of blithely modeling climate based on hunches and suppositions, climate scientists would be better off abandoning their ivory towers and actually measuring what happens in the real world.

Be safe, enjoy the interglacial and stay skeptical.

Cults don't generally end that way.

Unfortunately, they will keep this rot going for as long as they can keep suckling at the government teat.

Then they will move onto the next dreamed up useless-model driven catastrophe.
