I'm sure this has been asked before, but the search tool on Dave's is completely useless, so, sorry if I'm asking an obvious question.
I've been in Korea almost a year now, instead of jumping to a new job, I'm wanting to go to Sogang and study Korean for 6 months then start working again. However, I have noticed we need FBI checks now. The first time around I did a state check, and for some reason a misdemeanor I had about 5 years ago didn't show up. It wasn't a biggie or anything, just throwing some eggs at people when I was in college. But, now that we need FBI checks, I am worried it might show up this time around.
Anyone know anything about this? A co-worker of mine claims her boyfriend had a DUI and still came here, so I shouldn't worry, but still, that would suck to spend 6 months studying Korea, only to apply for a job and be told I can't work here later on. Figured I'd ask, better safe than sorry! |

It is inconsistent. You could be rejected or you may get through.

After 1 January 2011, if it shows up on a Federal CBC, you can forget teaching in S Korea... |

THE
ONLY
WAY
you can REALLY know
what is on your CRC
is to REQUEST it
from the FBI
and READ IT.

Yeah, thanks for that. Although that had nothing to do with my question. If you forgot what the question was, you can read the title of the thread, it sums it up pretty well. |

Okay, newbie, put your ears on, because this is the last I'm saying on the topic. Nobody here works for the Korean MOE. Nobody here works for your POE. Nobody here works for immigration. And *if* in the unlikely event that they did, the odds of them being assigned to your case are ridiculous. So first hand information is out.
So you come in here knowing that you will not get an official response and ask if a misdemeanor for being juvenile (surprise there) will affect your employment opportunities. All your information will be second hand, but you don't care! It's official enough! Yet you fail to understand that nobody here knows anything.
So what would my advice be to you? Try it. Send in your CRC. If they deny your application, then you live and learn. But...wait.
You don't know if you have a misdemeanor on your CRC that you've never seen, so you come here to a room full of strangers who don't know any more than anecdotes, to ask a question that is a judgment call on a good day, and you expect a reasoned, critical response.
And you talk to me like I'm the retarded one? |

Buddy, calm down. Really man, are you like this in real life? I asked a simple question, and it was pretty reasonable. Sure, no one here knows first hand about my case, that's pretty obvious, but isn't it likely that someone here MAY have came to Korea with a misdemeanor before? Did you consider that possibly?
You've done nothing but make yourself look like a jackass. Like someone else said, if your so tired of these threads, quit clicking on it. Your first response had nothing to do with my question, you just felt like being a *beep* and sure enough did a good job of being one. Now you're trying to start some stupid Dave's ESL cafe internet fight to save face.
Thanks for your input, although it was pretty obvious already, I was more or less asking for people that may have first hand experience in coming here with a misdemeanor. Clever guy, you are. |

i had a misdemeanor and it never showed up on the CBC--state and fbi level. SOmetimes the crime you commit just stays at the Municipal level (your city) and the record never leaves the courthouse where you got convicted. So, the only way they would find it is if the checked every courthouse docket with your name---they aint doing that.
BUT if you were getting a security clearance with the United States military, then that crime would pop up---no matter how big or how small. The police and security clearance personnel have access to any and all crimes you've ever commited. They check every level and everywhere. The average run of the mill background check wont show everything, and if the crime was small and never reported to the FBI, there is never a record of it to begin with. i dont think your egg tossing extravaganza is on the Fed's watch list. They dont care about that, and the state isnt going to waste their time sending it to the Feds. I know first-hand that this is the case. And i am almost certain that you have nothing to worry about; i dont think it'll pop up. Mine didnt. also i believe misdemeanors drop off your record after 7 years. |

Ok, let me re-phrase. You can't work here with a known criminal background. |
