I'm in a public school and I work 8 hours also (8:30am to 4:30pm).

I work 8 hrs technically but if you consider the problems with getting to school that means I have to be there at least 30 min - 1 hr earlier and allow for another hr to get home.

I would say that I spend 10 hrs a day or more tied to my school. The problem is when I need to go to a bank to pay monthly bills. I am in the countryside far from banks and even getting time off before or after class becomes a major interrogation/ issue by the school.

I think I will look at other options next time. I dont mind being miles from Seoul, but when I have to spend up to 2 hrs in travel for 5 minutes at the bank, it becomes a problem.

So before you take a job, find out how close you are to towns or how many buses go to your area. Also find out how far your house is from the actual school. They might be thinking they are helping you by putting you in the nearest large city, when the closest town might suit you better as you spend less time in travel.

At my old hagwon I started work at 6:30 in the morning and didn't finish until 10pm. Early morning conversation classes, followed by afternoon classes full of ajummas. Then I'd make a 45 min. trip across town to do a couple kindergarten classes. Another 45 min. trip back to the office for evening classes from either 5-10 or 7 to 10, depending on the day of the week. 14 or so hours a day either teaching, preparing to teach or waiting for my next class to start for almost the entire year I was there. Whatever your schedule is, it could be far, far worse.

Exact same problem. I work 8 hours - but have a 2 to 2.5 hour daily commute. I'm travel sick when I arrive at school (sitting on floor of school bus) and when I get home, I'm too tired from travelling to do anything but cook and veg out. Basically the commute sucks all the energy out of my day - and the passion from my teaching.

This PS school doesn't give a flying fig, and won't even let me leave 15 mins earlier to catch a school bus home (which shaves 30 mins off the commute). Sparkling. Roll on contract end.

Monday and Wednesday: 8-6:20

Tuesday and Thursday: 8-5:10

Friday: 8-4

Some of that is desk time, however. My teaching hours total 28/week.

I don't know if this is possible for your bills or if you know about it, but you can pay your bills through the ATMs (even after banking hours). Look at your bills and it should have bank account numbers with their bank names (some have only one bank account). Then just wire transfer the money to that account number and keep the receipt.

If you can't read Korean, I am sure your co-teacher would be able to explain the process.

Not sure if this is possible in the smaller towns though.

define "work"

I have a 40 hour publisc school job where I actually "work" for 18 of them.

The other 22 are mine to do with as I see fit.

Occasionally i do some school "work" in that time as well
