|
|
I am planning on returning to Korea to teach after a two-year break and am currently in the early stages of trying to figure out exactly what documents I need before I start looking for a job. I taught in Korea between 2005-2008, and therefore missed out on the new visa process that kicked in around early 2008.
There's an awful lot of conflicting and confusing information out there on what is or isn't required in order to obtain an E2 visa. The recent changes to the E2 visa rules have also added an extra dimension to the whole process.
I'm a British citizen currently living in Italy and as such would be grateful if anyone could help clarify a few things for me.
From the information I've come across I believe that I will need a notarised and apostilled CRC, and a notarised and apostilled photocopy of my original degree certificate. From my research, immigration have stated that sealed transcripts will no longer be required, and that original degree certificates will no longer be accepted.
My questions are:
1) Does the photocopy of my degree certificate need to be notarised AND apostilled, or can it be just one of the two?
2) Does the photocopy need to be apostilled by the FCO, or can the Korean embassy in London apostille it?
3) Do I need to show a set of sealed transcripts in order to have the copy of my degree certificate apostilled?
4) Can this process be done by mail or must it be done in person? (For those in the UK)
5) Are any other documents required before I can start my job search, and then apply for an E2 visa?
Thanks for any help in advance. Apologies if similar questions have been posted before. |

1) If you are looking at getting the apostille (as compared to the simpler process of K-consulate certification or KCUE verification) then you probably have to have your copy legalized before the apostille is affixed (If I understood the process for Brits and the FCO).
2) the Korean embassy/consular service CAN certify (not notarize nor apostille) the copies of your degree.
The process is fairly simple. You will need your original degree, copies to be certified (several would probably be best), sealed transcripts, ID (passport), application and fee. It is usually overnight service.
3) I doubt if for the apostille. Yes for embassy certification.
4) Again, it is a new service so the answer is presently unknown. I expect you can get it done by mail since you are not required to swear an affidavit so personal service should not be required.
5) Beyond the certified degree copy you still need a national police check WITH an apostille affixed.

Ttompatz,
Thank you for your response. Just a quick query regarding the second point. Are you implying that a copy of my degree certificate certified by the Korean Embassy in my home country would be accepted by immigration even if it hasn't been notarised and apostilled? Is this possible, or do we still need to notarise and apostille all copies of our original degree? |

I contacted the Korean Embassy in London yesterday and just received a reply by email today stating in mangled English that they do not certify or authenticate copies of original degree certificates. So it looks like British citizens must continue to go through the FCO when attempting to apostille a degree certificate. If any other Brit is currently going through this process and can confirm this then please do. |

Apostille is by FCO. Sure.
The question now is notarization!
It appears this may have to be done via affadavit from your university. |

Junior,
Where did you hear about copies of university diplomas needing to be notarised by the actual university? I would have thought that notarisation by a recognised public notary/solicitor and then an apostille by the FCO would be more than enough to satisfy Korean immigration... |
