Hello all,

I'll be renewing my contract with the same uni at the end of Feb next year. From what I have read on here, it seems like the Disclosure Scotland criminal check will be accepted by Korean immigration. Could anyone tell me the following -
1) Do we Brits need a full disclosure or basic?
2) How can we get the check done while we are in Korea?
3) How long does it take?
4) Is there an expiry on the criminal check in the eyes of Korean immigration?

Many thanks,

Richard Pumpy.

1. You can only order a basic one as an individual. This is the one accepted by immigration (along with the subject access).
2. Not sure. Perhaps someone else knows this. I think you just order it online and send proof of address via email to them.
3. If ordering from Korea, anything up to working 21 days. If done from the UK, 14 days.
4. 6 months, if I recall correctly.

Thanks for the swift reply. Hopefully its as easy as that. Cheers.

Oh yeah, and if anyone has info, or has gone through the process from within Korea, could you please expand on question number 2.

Just wondered what criminal record check you used last time to come out on your current E2 visa? If it was a basic disclosure you may be okay as you are.
I may be wrong but from what I have read regarding the changes, I think as long as we have submitted a NATIONAL criminal record check before and have not been out of Korea for more than 3 months then we dont need to submit a new one when renewing.

I'm currently in the process of applying for a Basic Disclosure and I'm also located outside of the UK though not in Korea. From what I read on their website, if you're resident in the UK and can prove this then you can make an online application, if not, you'll have to make a paper application. To do this you need to order the forms off their website. I've no idea how long that would take.

OP - I'm in the same boat as you. You can order a Basic Disclosure whilst in Korea. Order it online and then have it sent to an address in the UK and then have friends or family forward it to you in Korea. My problem is I am wondering how to get it verified.

Before the new checks it was enough to get a letter from the British Embassy verifying the document. Does anyone know if this is going to be enough this time around?

There also seems to be alot of confusion on the 3 month rule, If we haven't left Korea for more than 3 months do we still need to submit a check?

It seems like everyone posting in the thread are brits so hopefully we can keep it going and share as much info we get about the process involved in renewing after Jan 1st next year?

Check with immigration as to whethar or not you will to submit a new criminal record check.

I believe that the criminal record check must be apostilled. If it is a disclosure one it will need to be notarized first. There is a notary at Disclosure Scotland who will sign it for free. Once you recieve the notarized document you will need to send it off to the FCO to get an apostille.

These kinds of questions are constantly coming up and you can find the information that you need on this website.

Check the new immigration rules and check for similar threads. It's all been covered before.

just recieved the following from the UK embassy

"Thank you for your e-mail.

We have equivalent service as apostille for your UK police check for the Korean E-2 visa purpose.

For this service you need to submit the following;
1) UK passport
2) Original UK police check
3) Service; W88,000 (This is according to our current exchange rate, the consular exchange rate is subject to change without notice).
4) Processing time; one work day

Embassy Operation Hours: 0930am - 1200pm

We also accept applications by post.
For the return, if you cannot come here for collection, we can also send your documents by post.
For this you need to pay 3,000Won extra"

sounds to me that if you're there already in Seoul then you can just get the 'apostille' there

you lucky people.

Apologies for hijacking the thread somewhat, but does it matter to immigration what address is put on the Basic Disclosure? I'm not resident in the UK and do not possess a UK address. The address I will use is my family's address in Italy which is where I'm currently residing. Is this going to throw a spanner in the works?

Then do the paper application...(above).

Seems to be a problem with it going through though. They want server details etc to apply.. Rolling Eyes

Yeah I've already applied for the application form by email, and will make a paper application but what I meant was, when the Basic Disclosure is completed and returned to me it will have my address on it (non-UK address) and I was wondering whether this would be a problem for immigration...

Disclosure Scotland seemed to be good, but then they forgot to sign the darn thing in my case. Had to send it back and then it got lost in the post which screwed my hiring chances.

Note that Disclosure Scotland won't return the check by airmail. They will only send by surface. This could potentially take 2-3 months. You can specify a UK address to which they can post it to which can be different from your residential address - ie this is an option set out on their application form. Then, get whoever lives at that UK address to airmail it on to you.

The whole thing is a pain in the ***.

The website says 21 working days. Potentially, perhaps, but I found them to be quite good when ordering my check back home. I've just ordered one from here. We shall see how long they take.
