haha thanks!

m_et, glad to see you're using the search function (and surprised you got it to work unless you're using the independent google one). But, you can start a new thread if you haven't found relevant information.

I have an interview with a principal from Maple Bear in Bucheon. I was looking at the some of the posts and was wondering if anyone had any information regarding that specific branch. Any insight would be of great help.

Also, I hear that Hagwon schools are horrible to work for because the parents tend to dictate the lessons of the teacher; however, the students are much more disciplined. Is this true?

Any advice as to which public schools in South Korea would be best?

I think that it's near where I live because I've seen the bus parked near my apartment a lot. Not picking up kids or anything, just parked.

If you want, I can go check out the school and accommodation for you. PM me.

I would really appreciate it a lot. Unfortunately, I cannot pm or email you because I don't have enough posts. If you can, please email me at [email protected]
Looking forward to hearing from you! Very Happy

But the guy who is helping me, Tyler is really helpful. ^_^

Stay away from Maple Bear chain Hogwans. I have heard horror stories and i know a Korean teacher and 5 NETs that have all had NASTY experiences there.

Korean teacher was duped out of 4.5M won by the Hogwan owner and other 5 NETs were either released without being payed properly or denied various contractual elements.

STAY AWAY! Evil or Very Mad

If you have no qualifications and no experience, this might be an OK place to start.

You will make about 200,000 more per month than average, but you will likely be: directly exposed to unreasonable parents on a daily basis (you are directly accountable), made to spend 9 or more hours at school with big "breaks" between classes, expected to submit daily and/or weekly lesson plans with very little help from the shoddily prepared online curriculum. Preparation time is not considered work time, and you may be expected to teach/sub your full 120 hours without any sort of overtime pay.

I speak from personal experience, but also what I know of Maple Bear's reputation. Note that Maple Bear is a franchise, and that there may be a huge difference between individual branches. Having a good director, decent help from Korean staff, and a boss who is at least honest, can go a long way.

Is the extra money worth it to you?

Jailed? Not saying it may not have happened but I've never heard of anyone being jailed working illegally. Deproted, yes. Not even fined. The school may get fined if its proved. I've known or heard of 3 cases since I've been here and no one has ever been jailed from what I understand. I completely agree about not coming if you don't have the proper documentation. All for that but I wouldn't want to overstate the consequences. Maybe someone has gotten jailed but every time I've heard of actual stories from a friend of the person or people that knew them, it was always deportation and they couldn't come back for a certain time or ever. I worked at a school where they once had a prior teacher on a fake degree. He was deported. No jail or fine.

Stay away from Maple Bear Suwon. Owner cares more about money than students or teachers. I have heard the other maple bears are much better such as songpa and bucheon. Unfortunately, each maple bear is different and the quality will vary but there are some good maple bear owners.
