|
|
(Moved from another thread with a different subject heading)
Bought a new PC last week - with help from posters here, got it to display Windows 7 in English.
Now I need to get Microsoft Office (Word and Excel). Amazon and Microsoft will not ship it here from the US, and Microsoft's Korean site seems to contain nothing in English. I am also concerned about successfully loading it, if the prompts would come up in Korean. Unfortunately also I am nowhere near Seoul, and my survey of two large electronics stores showed no software.
So - where can I buy it? (I looked into buying a version I could just download, but neither Microsoft nor Amazon offers it.) And are my concerns about Korean prompts justified?
Thanks! |

Your worries about having the prompts in Korean are unjustified.
If you have a north American credit card you can buy it from microsoft.com as a download. http://www7.buyoffice.microsoft.com/asia/basket.aspx?cache=1584298107&culture=en-GB
burn your own copy from the download.
If you don't have or can't get it that way, simply google "torrents" and Office (version number that you want) and download a copy. Just be sure to check the comments section before you do to see if it is a good copy or not. http://isohunt.com/torrents/Microsoft+Office+2010 is but one of several hundred sites that have it listed.
Your local computer shop (not one of the big electronics stores) will probably also be able to burn you a pirate copy for a small fee.
If they can't or you can't find one close to home, go to your local PC-bang and ask them to do it for you. 20k won should get you a copy of office 2003 or 2010.
Any fool with enough wherewithal to post on a tech board should be able to burn and install a copy without being handheld all the way. You can install a game can't you? No different. Insert, press next, next, next, input the user key and install.

Clicked the URL, and did the following. All screens are completely in Korean:
Screen 1: Clicked on green bar bottom left.
Screen 2: Selected "MS Office Home & Student 2010." 198,999 won.
Screen 3: Got a blown-up product description. Clicked on green bar bottom center.
Screen 4: Apparent shopping cart screen, populated with one copy of OH&S (correct), W 198,999. Panel on right sayd W 25, 199 - a shipping or handling fee? Click on large green bar bottom right.
Screen 5: Blue box on left, with two fields to be populated by me, maybe (login info. for previous customers?). White box with orange header on right and blue box bottom right. Click on the blue box.
Screen 6: Now onto what looks like an address input screen - click on the large box but it won't let me go further.
How do I tell this site I want only the download and not disks? And how do I get through this without understanding the Korean (or is there a facility somewhere on this site to change the language)?
Thanks again! |

Why go through all that hassle? Just get yourself OpenOffice. It's free and the English version will operate perfectly--in English--on a Korean OS. |

Change your browser and computer location to US/english and your problem goes away (quits defaulting to Korean language screens).
Or pop down to your local PC bang and get them to burn you a copy.
When it comes time to "register" it you can let MS tell you it is a counterfeit version and pay for a real registration number to make it legal (with all updates, etc).

Yeah---is there a reason you need MS Office?
I use Open Office at school, too with "Portable Apps" so it works on any computer via my USB drive. |

Maybe because MS Office is 1000X better than Open Office? |

This problem is actually very easy to solve with just a couple of quick and easy steps................ but I suspect the OP is one of those people who think that the Microsoft Corporation needs more money. So, no need for me here!! |

People who want to purchase Office or whatever legally don't necessarily think that the creators NEED the money, but we feel that just because they have lots of it doesn't mean we can STEAL their work.
Just because Hyundai has lots of money, can you go steal a car and not feel bad?
Just because oil SK has lots of money, can you go steal a tank of gas or a phone?
Of course not. It's no different for Microsoft. |

The reason I don't steal cars isn't because it's morally wrong, it's because I could easily get caught and punished......and it might inconvenience the owner a lot, who might be just a guy like me.
Those two things don't really happen when I steal MS software.
If I thought I could steal cars from a large corporation famous for their huge profits, and not get caught, then hell yeah! I'd steal those cars. To provide better for my family.
We would seem to have a different set of morals........I would never ever steal from an individual who I thought was a regular Joe like me............But I see no problem in stealing from those who don't even notice it's gone cuz they're making so much money.
Stealing isn't always wrong......just like killing isn't always wrong. Lots of the simplistic rules our parents taught us when we were children aren't so simplistic when you're an adult living in 2010..... |

So, all of a sudden, Microsoft doesn't have any "regular joe" workers? All of a sudden, Microsoft is only one rich person? Or perhaps that post above is merely self-serving. |

Are you using the, 'what if everybody stole their software?' line? If everybody stole software then MS workers would start getting canned?
The fact is, everybody doesn't. Most people buy their software as it comes preinstalled on the computer they buy. Microsoft see piracy as a thorn in their side, but definitely not a business-destroying threat.
You can come up with 'what if' scenarios all day.....they don't mean anything if they aren't actually reality.
If Microsoft actually can prove that they are laying off workers and they are going into the red because of piracy........then I might reconsider using downloaded Windows....
As it stands, MS continue to have great business success......in fact, piracy actually creates more jobs as MS, I'm sure, have hired people to combat it.
I sleep well at night. |

Thanks. I have changed my version of Windows to English, but how do I change my briowser and computer location? Sort of a Catch-22 if the screens to do that are in Korean. |
