My CT sticks only to the book, and it drives the students and I both crazy! 40 minutes of listen and repeat, and then those retarded games! I have suggested several ways of improving the class, but all have been shot down!

I went from teaching HS to Elem so as one can well imagine, I do not teach the way she wants me to. Have any of you deviated from the textbook and still had a successful class? If so, what did you do differently?

I stick to the book for the CD part, but thats about it. We never use the book games. Those are terrible... and the kids hate'em.

I would take the advice above tho, just go with the flow...

ask the school to front the bill for www.barryfunenglish.com. A year's subscription is only like 20-40$, i forget which.

They have good vocabulary that complements the lessons nicely, and the games aren't amazing, but they are 10000x better than those retarded card games over and over from the book.

my kids like a lot of the card games. hahaha. or they stomach them at least.

barryfunenglish is nice, but i'm not sure what it accomplishes other than getting the kids to shout out single vocabulary words at the screen

My co-teacher wants me to do everything in the book so I do that but then add lots of other stuff.

We do look and listen, repeat, songs (unless I can find a good alternative), reading, writing and role plays all from the book.

I add a ppt with pictures to practice the key expressions as the book doesn't really do that at all. So many different version of the key expression (e.g. let's play soccer, let's play baseball). Maybe your co-teacher would agree to something like that to improve the lesson.

I also rarely use the games in the book as they are pretty lame so I make my own games. Maybe you could make a game for the lesson and show it to your co-teacher - if they see it they might be more inclined to use it.

I don't like the barryfunenglish games but there are sometimes worksheets on that site which you can use. You could make a worksheet to practice words or sentences and see if your co-teacher would agree to use them. My students like doing worksheets.

Maybe she would let you add a short video. Gogos (a dinosaur learning English) often has a lesson which matches the key expression (there is one for 3rd grade Can you swim?). Just search on youtube.

However, if they really won't budge from the book then you will just have to relax and go with it.

Although letting your CT run the show is certainly more stress-free, you'll degrade as a teacher, it won't be as fun and work satisfaction is gonna go down.

Make a powerpoint game to review the language. When your CT sees the kids really liking them, you'll be able to do more. Principles etc also like powerpoint games for open classes.

Who cares what you are labelled or respected as. Try to find a way to help the students regardless of the system that is teacher centered rather than student centered. Teaching is not about the teacher's ego it is about the needs of the students.
