..but, FIBA is right around the corner and Turkey is hosting the tournament this year.

http://www.fiba.com/pages/eng/fc/even/rank/p/rankMen.html

Does anyone care?

USA - Will they take the gold? Will Greece/Spain/Argentina knock them out of the top three? Surprise teams?

I love FIBA. It is refreshing to see the game the way it should be played IMO. More teamwork, back cutting, pure shooting etc. None of this one on one dunk crap that the NBA is filled with. Also there aren't any superstar calls. I love seeing a guy like Dwight Howard, who charges every time he puts the ball on the floor, pick up 3 fouls in the first 8 mins of play because the refs aren't sucking his modedit. Ditto for when Lebron goes up for a layup and gets stuffed but doesn't get any love tap calls.

I went crazy when team Canada got a qualifying spot. We actually should have never beaten Dominican but we pulled out a win to get a spot in the tournament. Our team is pretty crappy outside of Joel Anthony and Andy Rautins. On the bright side our youngsters like Tristan TOmpson and Corey Joseph were all top top prospects and All Americans that were recruited to big name NCAA schools. In another 5 years or so, Canada is going to kick some ass in something OTHER THAN ICE HOCKEY. Thank god because it is about fricking time.

I think this tournament will again go to the USA but it isn't guaranteed. A lot of the USA players got their gold medal in Beijing/fat NBA contracts and are looking to coast.

How are you going to watch the games? I guess streaming online is the only option. Will it be on Korean televesion? SBS? ESPN Korea?

FIFA is not over, WTF????

you do know FIFA is the name of the world football organisation, not the sport.

All those dives you like watching would fall under the italian / french/ spanish / english football associations and not under FIFA.

But you're right, FIFA does suck!

Where do you think all the NBA players got the flopping from?

Vlade Divac picked it up from his Euro football counterparts and helped these ballers here perfect the art.

But you're right. I've got a love hate relationship with the NBA. I'd rather be dunking on someone than watching it happen.

This also might sound a little cynical, but I'd like to see China or some other underdog knock the U.S. out of medal contention. Just like I'd like to see the Miami Heat get knocked out of the first round next year.

I'm with you all the way Brick. I hope Miami wins 60 regular season games and then gets stomped out in the first round by an underdog team.

Also, yes, flopping has tried to make a footing in the NBA but refs are pretty good about calling it. It is much harder to flop and convince the ref in the NBA because usually the ref is right beside the play and can see everything that happens. Players also get CHARGED with a foul if they are flopping. THe worst players to flop are the Argentinians. Carlos Delfino and Manu Ginobili come to mind. When Carlos played for the raptors I remember a few times he flopped and the ref wouldn't buy it. Another time he tried and the ref gave him the foul. That stopped him from doing it for at least a while. Football allows absolutely no contact with the body, so the flopping diving cheating is more frequent. Many Soccer players are Nancys as well that were coddled and spoiled ever since they were 12/13 years old and ripping it up.

As for FIBA, I would like to see the USA lose because of the wade/bosh/lebron tandem. I hope they fail hard.

Serbia Spain
Argentina Lithuania
Russia U.S.
Turkey Slovenia

I actually think Lithuania can beat Argentina. Scola has got to
be tired.

And, Kevin Durant is the real deal. You're going to hear
about him for a longgg time. Maybe not like Jordan or Kobe....

Could one of you basketball fans explain where the excitement in the sport comes from, with the ball going in the basket every 5 seconds? Even when someone chucks it in from quite far out, nobody seems to act like it's a big deal. Someone told me once it was all about the blocking, is this correct? Or is it, as someone in a Woody Allen film said, just 'sitting around watching a bunch of pituitary cases stuff a ball through a hoop'?

I suppose this could be argued.....
but I believe bball players to be the best ATHLETES in the world
and I enjoy watching extraordinary feats of athleticism.
There is not a lot of standing around.

With any sport there is an analytical science and strategy
that you may not grasp unless you play or coach the game.

That being said, I would much rather play than watch.

AND, it is a world wide phenomenon. Almost like a plague.

They should raise the height of the hoop by another 10 feet to make it more interesting.

Yes, I remember the Americans discussing the possibility, in all seriousness, of widening the goals by a foot for the 1994 world cup.

Basketball players are getting taller all the time. Some of these dudes don't even need to jump when they dunk the ball. Raising the hoop might be the logical step when the average player is 7ft tall.

If you raise the hoop in the NBA then it will need to be raised in college. The nthe small schools who can't recruit the big guys are shooting on a 14 foot goal.
Raise it in college then you will need to raise it in AAU and HS. Then all the little podunk towns, like where I come from, score 5 points agame because the kids are 5'2 and barely strong enough to shoot a 17 foot shot on a 10 ft rim.
Then you gotta raise it in Jr H. The paper might read like this, "Jones MS defeats Middle Valley by a score of 6-4 in the 7th overtime!"
The kids would never score on a higher rim.

The majority of basketball is played by average sized ppl. No need to change the rim height.

Basketball has changed over the years and unless you're a player or coach, as someone said above, you might not see that dribbling at full speed with a two teamates in transition, making the decision for a pass, jump stop, pass fake in air manuever, etc... takes skill. The game takes an amount of skill and athleticsm that is rarely matched in other pro-sports.

Why does FIBA play an American game by different rules. It was invented in the US, do we make the base paths in baseball 5 feet shorter for other countries?

The paint should be the same as The States.

Basketball has the opposite problem to football (soccer to you fellas), where it is too high scoring. There are so many baskets in every game that it becomes very tedious.
