The tsunami of Chinese commerce is sparking tension and even violence in some parts of Africa.

In pursuit of personal profit and less competition, large numbers of Chinese are migrating to Africa - which they perceive to be a land of untapped opportunity and potential. In Dakar, Senegal's capital, small Chinese businesses are flourishing in a rapidly expanding Chinatown.

The Colony is a 23min video from AJ about Chinese migrants to Senegal. It's very interesting.

With little fanfare, a staggering 750,000 Chinese have settled in Africa over the past decade. More are on the way.

The strategy has been carefully devised by officials in Beijing, where one expert has estimated that China will eventually need to send 300 million people to Africa to solve the problems of over-population and pollution.

^ Typical DM hyperbole in that article but I've seen the 300 million number a few times.

This all isn't necessarily a bad thing. Probably more of a mixed thing.

I'm very open to Chinese engagement with Africa.

Africa is untapped compared to other continents, but the chinese will find competition with the Arabs, Indians, Nigerians who are everywhere and others. Its not going to be easy and will take a looong time. Numbers wont be enough.

What's really interesting about the Chinese/African alliance is that
their trade deals are super top secret. Nobody and I mean nobody
outside of the top tier aren't privy.

Pretty interesting.

I'm in favor. All the trillions in aid to Africa has not only not done any good but actually made things worse. The Chinese by contrast - pursuing self interest - are making real improvements
