One day on the subway (whatever Itaewon is on) all the cars were covered with ads for a plastic surgery clinic with the slogan, "Face is Not Flat."

Q: "What is the most distinctive feature of the non-Korean?"

A: Happiness, friendliness, sincerity, open-mind... to name a few.

Yes, the world wants to learn Korean. As we all know, Korea is the center of the universe. Just ask any Korean! Rolling Eyes

Occasionally, a student will kind of let me catch him or her making the shape of a big beak over his or her nose, which I assume is a loving homage to their exotic foreign teacher. I just ignore it, but it can't help but bug me a little. Isn't it like white kids pulling their eyes out at the corners when they see an Asian person? Yeah, I don't want to make a big deal about it, because it almost never happens, and if I paid attention to it, it would happen more. Who needs that?

This reminds me of the day I first walked into a Chinese kindegarten, and was introduced as their new English teacher. They'd never had a westerner in the school before, and there were very few westerners in the city (then). One small boy nearly fell off his chair in surprise, and then pointed to me and gestured to his nose at the same time (gesturing 'look at the foreigner's nose!') his eyes wide with surprise and wonder. He was just a little chap - maybe 3 years old, and it was very innocent on his part and he didn't mean any offence by it. I was the first foreigner he'd ever seen up close. I tried not to chuckle. It brought it home how distinctive our concord noses are in a land full of itty-bitty noses.

A lot of Koreans want "taller" noses. It's a common plastic surgery option here. Don't sweat it.

Yup... I got that during my introductory spiel at my new Elementary. Instead one 6th grade girl said high nose (during the questions part) I was a tad confused and turned for a profile and said yes, long, but she was persistent and explained that she meant high (or tall). Personally, I like having a long nose here. Very Happy

The contrast between Koreans and foreigners (NETs)- Koreans view Korea as the center of the universe. NEts view themselves as being the center of the universe.

Speaking strictly about non-military westerners:

the statistical oddity that sticks out to me is the near universality of the college degree. Exceptions exist of course, but the percentage is far higher than the norm here or in their home countries.

I have such an epic nose even for a westerner. One of my students compared my nose to the K secretary at my last school. (Her nose was high, but thin and straight). She was SO offended, I felt awful. I tried to find a support group for women with big noses, but they were all fetish sites. *sigh*
