First time -- any budget hotel recommendations? -- any insight into what it will be like there on the holiday?

Seoul turns into somewhat of a ghost town during Chuseok.

Stay at Hongdae Guesthouse, which is a hostel. The lady who runs it speaks English and she is really kind. She actually talked to the taxi driver for me late at night, and cooked me an egg for breakfast when I stayed there one weekend. Plus it's close to all the nightlife in Hongdae if you want to party.

I like the Blu Guest House in the same area. Very chill place and right in Hongdae. Other than that you can score some cheap love motels in the Sincheon Area just south of Hongdae. But yeah it will be dead. Go up there to get some sites in or maybe the DMZ, other than that expect to a lot of peace and quiet.

Here's a site that breaks down which tourist sites will be open and how to get around. Have fun!

Hondae it is then. Thanks for the info to anyone who has contributed.

Anyone know a decent hotel for under 80K a night that I can book through email?

I don't want to rock up in Hongdae and have no destination.

I too was wanting to go to the DMZ JSA Panmunjun area, but it's closed during Chuseok. I talked to my co-teachers about Chuseok and they said it's going to be dead, because people just get with their relatives in the smaller towns. I would expect shopping such as Yongsan electronics market will also be mostly deserted. I'd rather score a flight to Hong Kong or Osaka, but don't want to pay $500 to $700 just to go for 5 days. It's kinda of a waste to not stay very long if you are spending the money to fly somewhere. I'd take a 1 hour flight to Japan for $300 round trip, if available. It's only a 1 hour regional flight in economy class, no legit reason it should be $500 and up.

Just go! Explore! Do you need to your mom to hold your hand?

As one poster mentioned, Seoul will be pretty dead as many families travel outside of Seoul or stay home to visit with relatives.

There's a nice jimjilbang at the Seoul express bus station to check out. Otherwise, if you walk around any subway or train station you'll be sure to find any reasonable motel within 50m.

Hit the touristy spots during your first visit - COEX, Namdaemoon & Namsan Tower, Itaewon, Yongsan Electronics Mart, Korean War Museum, Cheongyechun stream in central Jeongno area, Hongdae nightlife. All of these places are located on the subway map.

The Seoul City Bus Tour is your friend. It circumnavigates practically each of the central Seoul spots mentioned above. You can take the circle tour or get off and get back on and go to the next.

If you are worried about planning, then check out the bus or train station, Subway map and bus tour online before you go.

You are sure to get lost along the way. It's all part of the experience.

No, but I have an anxiety disorder that causes me acute nervous tension when I'm in unfamiliar places and situations, especially when I'm in a crowd, and it causes me to involuntarily shit in my pants and start to cry.

Not really. I'd just rather get a good recommendation than wander around all sweaty and then randomly choose some dump. Is that so hard to understand?
