Column about Korea by sportswriter and the author of "Tuesdays with Morrie" Mitch Albom, who recently visited Korea.
"(American) kids laugh more, play more sports, express themselves more openly. The kids here (in Korea) are serious beyond compare, and they are driven to succeed. I'm not sure which system I'd prefer, but I know they are apples and oranges, and the length of a school year is only a tiny difference. It may take a village to raise a child. But it takes a country to educate one."

Good for him for going the "Newsweek" route and not making an actual point. Fluff journalism from a fluff novelist. |

I say this all the time, he nailed it on the head.
The only point I disagree with is the time period, they are closer to the world war 2 era.
After a length of time educating students like this, they will eventually learn there is more to life than pounding algebraic theorems into your child's head for 6 hours a day. |

The whole pressure-cooker atmosphere of Korean society is leading many to shun having children. From what I hear, the next generation of Korean adults will be anything but promising. |

Blasphemy! You are guilty of a sense crime and must be summarily "processed" by a Korean Cleric. |

Well I'd expect if he can somehow travel back in time 100 years then he should also be able to gain a solid grasp on a foriegn culture in a *week.
I'd also love to see how this article changes after one day in a vocational school.
Wow, this is complete trash. It's like the tours North Korea runs to show their great country, where you see less than a square mile of it.
"Respect for elders is Paramount in Korean scociety" - Sparkling.
This guy apperently never rode the subway or looked on a bus in Korea. Let alone walked the streets.
Maybe he mistook crazy ajumas plowing through or yelling at everyone for "respect."
Or maybe the people he met who were students that could read a novel in English represent the top 1% of the conutry and a life you will never find on averege in any country.
