Tutor caught illegally earning hundreds of millions of won
By Park Si-soo
A Korean private tutor was caught earning more than 150 million won ($130,000) a month, without paying tax, from illegally teaching students in an apartment in the affluent southern Seoul.
Under the law, adults who are engaged in private tutoring are obliged to report their monthly income to the education authorities, a measure to prevent tax evasion. But many tutors ignore the rule.
The Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education was tipped off about the tutor who was known to be working in Dogok-dong.
He allegedly taught a group of students in a 337 square-meter (102 pyeong) apartment, charging about 10 million won per student per year. This is the first time that a tutor who has taken such a large amount of tutoring fees has been caught.
He is refusing to answer questions from the officials from the education office. |

No, when a kyopo breaks the law in Korea, they are definitely portrayed as a foreigner. |

I've met a few Koreans who "claimed" they were making that kind of money, and in all of those cases they were teaching subjects other than English.
I used to work with a guy who was getting 200,000 per hour to teach Korean literature. He had a PhD in K. Lit, his wife had no job, they had 2 beautiful daughters and were living in a sweet high rise apartment at Beomeo intersection in Daegu (as I understand it, next to gangnam this is the most expensive real estate in Korea)
Needless to say..he was doing pretty well considering all he did was teach private lessons. |

Why is the education board on him about this? Wouldn't this simply be a tax issue? Government intervention sparkling. |

I'm willing to bet there is a digit off in the report. Even the "superstar" tutors who work UNGODLY hours can't break $1 million per year. The most I've ever heard of was between $500K to $850K. Plus from personal experience, I can tell you that you need to start hiring assistants once you hit a certain point. It becomes too difficult to juggle a lot of people. |

What an idiot. If he could get that kind of cash (if that is even possible) why not do it legally and keep that gravy train running forever?
Also, I'd like to see these classes. The idea of a "superstar teacher" is so silly. What on earth is he doing in these classes to make people think it is worth that much money? |

There is no digit off the amount is given in won and dollars, he was a famous tutor in gangnam, charged a little under 1 million per month per student. He would have had around 150 students.
apparently he had a couple of people working with him. |
