Hi,
I had a quick question about the Hagwon I am working at. I have an F-4 visa and applied for my ARC a weak ago. The director at my Hagwon has been very insistent on finding out when I will get my ARC because she says she needs to register me with the government listing me as a teacher at this Hagwon. They want me to give them my ARC and Passport so they can register me. Now, I can totally understand why they might need this, to set up/enroll me in the NHIC, to set up taxes, etc. However, becacuse they have already done some shady things to other teachers, I wanted to check on Dave's ESL to make sure this is cochure. Because I have an F-4 visa, do they still need to take my ARC # to register me as a teacher at this Hagwon? F-4 is just a residency visa, not like the other E-2 teachers that work here with me. Again, this may be a silly question, but since I already don't trust them, I wanted to make sure handing over my information to them is okay. Also, if they register me with the government as a teacher with this school, will it make things harder for me if I want to quit before my year is up? I didn't know what consequences that would have since I have an F-4 visa. Thanks so much.

Make them write up a promissory note for what purposes they are using the documents for and make sure you get a copy.
Problem solved.

Make copies. They don't need your original documents. If they insist, tell them you'd be happy to go with them, but you're not going to give them your passport (it's not yours to give).

thanks so much for the tips. They sound like such common sense ideas (making copies) but I wouldn't have thought of them. I will definitely follow your advice and feel much better now.

They must legally register you with the local office of the Ministry of Education. The Ministry will want to see the original documents. If you feel uncomfortable giving your employer your documents, you can go with him to register or you can go yourself and register. Personally, I have never given my documents to anyone except government agencies.

Go with him. There are some horror stories where hagwon owners kept documents hostage. Just smile and say "We can go together."

Sorry man, but I really gotta stress this about your passport.

If they're not going to put something in your passport, they don't need your passport. Period.

But we need the original document!

No, you don't. You can walk me down to the notary and we can get a certified copy, but you don't need my original unless you're adding something to it.

What is the problem? Do you think I am lying?

No, I don't, but think about it this way. Have you ever lost anything? In your entire life? Wonjangnim, this passport represents my ability to travel in the world. If you lose it, I have to get a new one, which means a trip to Seoul and a chat with the Embassy, and possibly a police report. And I can't even get you to pay for a replacement because my Embassy would tell me that I shouldn't have given it to you in the first place.

I promise I won't lose it.

What about the other people you come in contact with? Every time my passport enters someone else's hands, there's a chance it might get lost or stolen. I'm not going to take that risk. I'll make you a copy, or I will go with you. Those are the terms.

Why you make me so hard??

Well, I don't know anything about that, but all passport related questions can be directed to the US Department of State.

Sorry. This I know it's off topic, but it always cracks me up when a Korean (especially a woman) asks me "Do I make you hard?" First time a female co-worker said that to me I couldn't believe I'd heard her right.

Back on topic though, I think that the OP was talking about his ARC, not his passport. I don't really think that they need your ARC. (They definitely don't need your passport.) I'd probably give them photocopy and say that you need it for something yourself for the next couple weeks. If you don't need it for anything else at the moment, and this is a full time job, I'd give it to them for a day or two. You can get a new ARC easily enough. I probably wouldn't give them my passport though.

The Education Office needs to keep a copy of your ARC on file when you are registered as a teacher. You have to register as a teacher within 10 days of your first teaching day with a copy of your ARC. This means that E2s must get their ARC within 10 days, not 90 days, in order to be a legal teacher.

Sometimes the Education Office wants to see the original ARC, sometimes they will accept a photocopy only. They will keep a copy on file. They used to require a copy of your transcripts be filed there as well.

Your school also needs a copy of your ARC to sign you up for pension and health insurance.

Your biggest worry should be if you work at a school that doesn't want to borrow your ARC to get you enrolled everywhere.

Ahh, sorry, I re-read and you're right. Well, copies will do fine, and in that case, you're really afraid of him losing it because some bum might find it and sell it.

Thanks for the info. I guess I was mostly worried because I already don't trust the Hagwon. Plus, I didn't know if things were a little different because I have an F-4 visa.

It's easier to sell.

I'm not joking.
