What an idiot. If he could get that kind of cash (if that is even possible) why not do it legally and keep that gravy train running forever?

From what I understand the fees were higher than the limit a legal tutor is allowed to charge?
Probably why he wasn't legit. |

| This story just goes to show that you too can use your privates to make the big money over here. |

If he had other teachers working for him it sounds more like he runs a hogwon, than working as a teacher. I don't trust these numbers; it's just like when they say foreign teachers are averaging 5 Mil a month. It's just made up.
I don't trust what most teachers tell me they're making either:) |

Yeah, I would like to know about that. Is it fact or fiction that there is a limit and if so, what is the limit? I've heard some say that there is no limit. I have heard others say that there is a limit at a ridiculously low amount such as less than 10,000 won per hour. Is a limit or myth or not?? |

Haha, you just keep going on believing that. They say ignorance is bliss.
So, you should be quite happy.
Dude, an F2 picking up 3.2M for an afternoon after school program and
then doing just two private classes for 50K/hour after that is already at
5.2M. If they want to do more and work on weekends, over 6M or 7M is
quite easy. Do you understand? EASY |

I know a korean woman in my city who is a math wiz and got her BS in Mathematics at Columbia Univ. She lives in a very nice highrise apartment. She teaches exclusively privates. Spending 4 years in NYC has given her a great command of english as well and she's branched out to teaching english. She and I did a language exchange for a while. I didn't think she needed it but she wanted to stay sharp and prepare for teaching english.
The apartments in her area go for big money. 500 million won on the very low end. |

The newspaper article probably mistakenly states his yearly income as his monthly income.
If tutors make more than $1 million USD per year (putting them in the top 1-5% of Korean earners), then why doesn't every University Professor with a PHD or MBA just quit their university job and start private tutoring? Professors certainly aren't making that much.
Nearly every wage/salary claim you hear from a Korean is false. Newspapers and programs also exaggerate salaries to make their stories more interesting. |

As someone mentioned---this guy is running a hagwan. It's not really comparable to doing privates.
Also do parents really pay 15 million won a year for their kids after-school English class? Maybe. I'm not saying it isn't true. Years ago I worked at hagwons with shockingly few students---used to wonder how they stayed in business.
If the numbers are correct a hagwon could likely survive on 20 students(20 million plus a month.) Scary to think of the profit bigger ones make. |

I don't live in Seoul, but the after school programs in my city pay 2.2 and they sponsor and hire E2's. I know F visas making over 5 Mil but they're working their asses off teaching 12 hour days. I know that you can make good money teaching corporates but it's not easy to find them. The guys I know making good money are never around; yet they'll be some guy at the bar talking big that doesn't seem too bright or too busy. |

If you're working it that hard on an F2 to make 5 million, you're doing it wrong. That's only an average of 20k/hour, no F series in their right mind is selling themselves out for that. |

Yeah, but are they doing it legally? Low tutoring hourly rate limits? After school program - no additional workplaces contract clause? |

There is no digit off the amount is given in won and dollars, he was a famous tutor in gangnam, charged a little under 1 million per month per student. He would have had around 150 students.
apparently he had a couple of people working with him. |
At my peak I had 175 private tutoring students over the course of a year. I could tell you there is just no way you can keep track of everybody and the students are likely better off finding someone else to pay more attention to them. Especially not for the highly competitive education market in Korea. The only reason I had so many students was due to specialized expertise, which meant that they needed to come to me in particular.
Plus, thinking that you can have 150 students and not have someone blowing the whistle is wishful thinking to say the least.
The last time a group got caught, they were making $500K per year split out between 5 teachers. No way one guy is doing $1.3 million per year. I charge $200 per hour, work seven days a week, and have a support staff and I don't make half of that. |

He was probably running small groups. It multiplies the hours and time quite effectively.
he also had helpers as pointed out. Groups and helpers reduces that 150 to significantly less hours.
he was probably still working like crazy though. |

Haha, I nearly pissed my pants when I read this. "Low tutoring hourly
rate limits?" What planet are you on? I'm on Earth. The 3rd planet. |
