| I have a student who has a problem with repeating words and using too many "filler" noises (ah, um, etc.). Any ideas for exercises on how to correct this? |

| I saw a public speaking class on TV and their suggestion was to have the students pause and not say anything, whenever they have to think of a new idea. They were pretty strict about it and after some time, those students weren't doing it at all, and sounded much more natural. I would try that. |

ugh i'd be squirting him like every two seconds. i tried to get him to pause for 5 seconds before speaking but he gets all excited and forgets, i think. |

Count them. That's what my Public Speaking Prof did in College. He would take off points for each one.
Active Listening is the trick, it's a lifelong skill. Consult your favorite Google. |

LoL - Yes, I'm in the gem business! Got to make that my new motto.
I helped them set up the teacher's area and gave initial advice to get them started. Lots more soon. But they are a great group (and "get it" - that's why google has the majority share in them) and I want teachers to push their students to use.
Well - if I had to say just two things (one is too limiting). I'd suggest http://voicethread.com students have a hard time talking in class (Asian student I mean, I used to teach a class of Argentinians and I still suffer from the headaches and tylenol). I have loads of examples but it really is revolutionary from a language teacher's perspective. Load up a photo and tell your students to speak online about it. Assess them at your leisure with a pilsner at hand.
I'll also suggest, because I'm a big fan (but not cultist) of ER, extensive reading. http://tarheelreader.org I'm big into speech recognition and Gary's site for the reading disabled is perfect for second language students (and in my vocabulary, every second language student is disabled - in the sense that the brain is overloaded and doesn't work in its natural fashion. ).
So there you go , two more gems. Now back to setting up an ubuntu server so that teachers all over the world will have free teaching conference rooms. Stay tuned. This is possible with very little outlay.
