The Korea Times' Kang Shin-Woo (one of Korea's most respected journalists ) has been writing articles about foreign schools in Korea.
http://www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/news/nation/2010/09/117_73063.html
These schools charge up to 30 million won/year to attend, and yet they are unable to scrape together the cash to offer salaries that would entice more licensed teachers from foreign countries to come and ideally stay for more than a year or two? Incredible that parents would drop that kind of cash on their children's education, and yet not demand more stringent hiring practices by the schools.
I know that international schools in Hong Kong and Singapore offer very competitive pay packages (often equal to what a teacher in North America might make) as well as incentives such as settlement and housing allowances. This is how they are able to find and - most importantly - keep qualified teachers on their staff. This, of course, does not come up in the article.
Thoughts on the foreign school craze in Korea? |

The guy exaggerates. To keep their accreditation, schools need a certain % of certified teachers. The problem is, what if the school isn't accredited yet, but still considered a foreign school? OUCH. |

Pfft. Exaggerates? This guy has done no fact checking at all. As far as I know, the only schools that can hire any teacher they basically want are the religious ones. Any other public international school has to have licensed teachers.
I don't know about the pay though. I don't know if it's simply not competitive vs. "why would you live in Korea as an international teacher anyway?" |
