|

When I first came to Korea a few years ago, I was rather taken aback by the decent behavior of Korean men. After being gawked at, followed, groped, and even kidnapped (twice I was locked in a room by two perverts) in the Middle East, it was wonderfully refreshing.
However, things are changing here and fast! At first it was simply a case of people commenting about the lurid stares I was getting (it has reached a point where I have become aware of it and avoid eye contact with any unknown male). Without going into too much detail, I'm becoming increasingly uncomfortable. One incident in particular scared me which involved a group of 5 guys in a car that looked like it was straight out of a mafia movie and let's just say they wanted to pay my friend (male) for my "services".
Any ladies who've been here for while notice a shift in the behavior of Korean males? Do you still feel safe walking around by yourself late at night? |

Last year, I asked the wrong guy for directions to the nearby jimjillbang and he turned out to be a drunken idiot who followed me into the place and tried to prevent me from entering the place with an attempt to lunge in for a kiss. He was unsuccessful, but continued to bother the people at the desk until they came and got me. I was in the little pajamas and ready to go to sleep, but I had to wait until the police arrived before they would leave me be. They wanted to make sure that he was not my husband.
I still feel safe in Korea and pretty much anywhere. I'm not as street-smart as I was a few years ago, but it's amazing how much trouble one can avoid just by being aware of one's surroundings and using a little caution. |

I'm sorry to hear that.
I've not encountered any problems. You won't typically find me flying solo past 11pm. Once some college guys asked me to coffee, but that's it. I don't speak Korean so I wouldn't know if I was being harassed, I guess. |

Touche, and I think I became too comfortable with the whole "safe Korea" assertion. I don't drink or go out clubbing, though, which is why I would have thought that I'd be immune to unsolicited attention. |

Well life has certainly changed around here because I used to walk around by myself at 3am without a care in the world. |

Well it's not intentional, it just never happens as I am married and old. |

I read an article recently saying incidences of groping on the subway were going up. You might be onto something. |

Pop culture. Consider that the increase you notice, if it's a true phenomena, would parallel the rise of intensity of sexual suggestion in the media. The pop culture icons behaving more provacatively with ever more effective subliminal chasers, hidden in the soundtrack and the images. |

I agree 100%.In addition, I'm often mistaken for being Latina and the stereotype that has been created about them is not good... |

Just because you're married doesn't preclude you from being harassed. |

I think she meant being out after 11pm. Not that harassment only happens after 11pm. A Family Mart clerk tried to kiss my friend in the middle of the afternoon.
That stuff doesn't happen to me. I think they can tell that I wouldn't stand for it and would throw a massive, jerk-shaming fit. Possibly beat them up as well. *clenches fists and powers up the Aura of Hostility*
I've always avoided eye contact with strangers, so I haven't noticed anything unusual lately as far as that goes. |

Don't worry....it just means you're attractive and 'shek-si'.
I get stared at a lot by Korean men too.......are they all gay? Or maybe just curious about foreigners and lacking a little in manners... |

I can handle the staring by just ignoring it. It's when guys think they can touch you inappropriately that I get defensive. A male friend told me I have a "come hither" look on my face, but I don't see it. People tend to make assumptions about my behavior just by looking at my face , but that's the way it ALWAYS looks |

A guy grabbed me and I twisted his arm behind his back and asked if he liked it (in Korean). Wrist lock FTW. Thank you Renzo Gracie!
He slunk off after apologizing. |
