This is purely hypothetical so please don't jump on me. I have no intention of leaving, but I still want to understand what my options are.
I work at a public school. If I leave before the 6 month mark, as I understand I am responsible for: 1) repaying my flight here, 2) paying for my flight home, and 3) repaying the 300,000 won settlement allowance they gave me when I got here.
That is pretty straightforward in my contract, but these are my other questions:
1) What happens to the 900,000 won they took out of my pay as a security deposit (300,000 for each of the first 3 months)?
2) Assuming I don't leave on a pay-day, do I get pro-rated pay for the days I did work (of an incomplete month)?
3) Can I collect my pension?
4) If I give notice, do they HAVE to let me stay 30 days (if I want to)?
5) Conversely, do I HAVE to stay 30 days (if they want me to)?
This is all assuming I want to go about this legally (by giving 30 days notice) and not do a midnight run (which I don't want to do, the school has been pretty nice to me so far). |

| Pension....that's a yes, isn't it? You can even apply for that once you have left Korea (though it is easier to do here). |

i think it'll depend on your school.

yes, your school might try not to though, however if you contact the board of education they will back you up.

yes, but no severance.

yes, i believe this is in the labour law. again, you might need the school board to help you out.
5) Conversely, do I HAVE to stay 30 days (if they want me to)?
technically yes, but nothing's stopping you from just packing up and going. but since you're breaking a clause of your contract, your school might be even more tempted to mess around with the contract themselves.

You probably won't see it again.

You will get pro-rated minus your airfare, 300 thou allowance.
3) Can I collect my pension?
Not sure, usually pension is payed out after you worked for 1 full year

No, they don't. They may kick you out of your housing arrangement also

No you don't have to stay. Things could become really uncomfortable for you, unless you have a really good reason for leaving (a higher paying job isn't a good reason for your school)

Legally- well that means the school doesn't want to be without a foreign teacher. If you want to go on good terms, the 'sick family member' is what generally gets a nod of approval, especially if your school is nice (saves them face, you seem to be "responsible" everyone wins). |

| If you work for 1.5 years. Do you still get that 1 year's severance if you leave early? OR does that depends on how you left the school? |

| Winterfall, if you completed a 1 year contract, then they are obliged to give you your severance for the first year, as per the contract. That said, it doesn't mean that you wont' have problems getting it (or that you will have any problems). |
