| I think that half the time they don't read your resume. I've been asked "Have you ever been to Korea before?" and "Have you ever taught English before?" But the really weird part is that even a very brief glance at my resume would show a definite and unmistable YES to both questions. |

Same here. I mean, I keep my resume pretty simple. Not like you have to study it or anything. |

| Even now you get simple questions? When I came here in 2007 for a PS job, I gave no references. I went through a recruiter and was here in a month. Didn't even have a phone interview. But have heard EPIK has really gotten anal on the process now. Even for renewals, it was one of two questions. Do you like teaching? Do you like Korea? Ok, here's your new contract. But this year, a 3 person interview panel with several questions. Still easy compared to company interviews I went through. But definately not easy like before. Need this recession to get over with, so that Korea is fun again. But hakwons are still easy interviews? How difficult is it to get Seoul or Gyeonggi hakwons now? I suspect EPIK is taking a lot of the new applicants? |

| Mine asked whether I thought an inductive or deductive approach to grammar was the most appropriate with Korean learners. They also asked me how I would teach the passive tense using a guided discovery. |

I've had quite a few different experiences in terms of interviews.
Some have outright asked asked if I am a Christian, married, etc. It depends on who is doing the interview and how well they speak English. |

The renewal process for EPIK last August was very easy and straightforward and I asked for a transfer, which I got. This contract though I'm asking for an out of Province transfer. I'm going straight to EPIK for that, not even bothering with the POE.
The only sneaky question I have ever had was right at the end of my interview. The interviewer asked me in a way that sounded like it wasn't a big deal "What do you think about marijuana?" That was an EPIK interview though. The Hagwon questions I had have all been covered here and were laughable |

Usual BS questions...they rarely seem to read resumes.
I find throwing in some korean language seems to knock their socks off.
Granted, one foreigner gave me a massive 2 hour interview that asked every question under the sun and 2 impromptu teaching demos...and it was to be followed by a 2nd 1 hour interview with the owner in a different location.
That job was below average too! They had some hella high ass standards for themselves. |

Hah! I've had a few interviews like that. Especially for the editing gigs for some reason.
Guy at one who wasn't even supposed to be at the interview asked me a three-part question laden with theory answers behind TOEIC stuff that took him five minutes to say, then acted astonished when I didn't have a thoughtful answer for him. This was for an interview a friend working there lined up for me. He did his interview hungover heh.
Another one clearly advertised that they wanted people who could speak Korean well. Fair enough. I applied anyway just in case experience was more valuable. Lady arranging interviews asks me expected salary and Korean ability by e-mail, and I'm totally honest with her (can read and talk about the weather etc.). When I go in for the interview, 80% of it was conducted in Korean. For the little bit in English, instead of fielding questions about my resume and all, the woman asked me to explain my work history. I kept it brief, expecting questions. None were asked.
Thing is, I was so ticked off by the end of this one that I asked why speaking Korean was relevant for an editing job and pointed out that I can edit nearly anything with Naver on hand. She said to facilitate communication with my supervisors. She also treated me like a hakwon monkey when I had 4 years of recent relevant experience.
They're the kind of interviews where you don't leave disappointed in yourself for messing up on a question or something. You leave wondering why you bothered putting on a suit! |

You see they had an alcoholic "teacher" that caused them a lot of problems in that semester.
These days they may ask what you can do to make a lesson entertaining. |

The most important thing is your picture. Other than that you can get asked some crazy questions. I was once asked if I was willing to do illegal teaching. |
