I agree with the poster who suggested leather straps.

I also like skeleton watches. It creates a fine detailing which, I think, looks expensive.

I'm not a watch expert, I don't even own or wear a watch. But I wouldn't notice any of the watches you posted in an ad, in a store, or on a man. They are just sort of there...
But, if you must, I suppose the third one.

The dilemma I find in buying a nice watch is warranty vs. price.

If you buy the watch from an unauthorized distributor, the manufacturer usually doesn't warranty the product. However you will save anywhere between 10 to even 90% off the full price. However, if you want the warranty, you will probably pay full price.

Given the failure rate of ALL watches, I can't justify dropping more than a couple hundo.

That's a sound point, but the watch will be purchased from a AD (Authorised Distributor) There are companies out there that offer in house warranties with the products they sell, in my experience the warranty has been just as good. All quartz watches at some point need their batteries changed and all mechanical self winding watches need to be fine tuned anywhere from 3-5 years. I'm not saying that the $200 dollar watch is garbage. I have quite a few of the "couple hudo" watches. That being said I'm still going to buy one of the four I have posted perviously, regardless of their possible failure rate.

Cheers,

If I were personally going to buy a watch that is relatively affordable this is what I would recommend:

Diver/chronograph: Rolex as mention, Ball, or if you ACTUALLY plan on using it to dive, a workhorse as the again mentioned Omega or Seiko advocates have lauded. I always though wearing a diving watch and actually doing the diving was a bit badass and reverse if no diving took place.

Dress: Rado for a slick nite on the town look or if you are prone to scratching your timepiece, and maybe a Frederique Constant or a NOMOS Glashutte if you like the german flavor.

Crazy rich: A Patek Phillipe or one of those crazy limited edition bespoke watches that is powered by a nuclear reactor.

Nice choice. I have the Aquaracer 300M Automatic. Can I ask where you bought it from? I found that the Duty Free Shops in Korea are significantly cheaper than department stores and even sometimes U.S. prices.

Hi IS-F,

I bought it at Walkerhill duty free. It was by far, after a year of researching prices in the US. Canada and Korea, the best priced. I saved approx 900 USD buying it there. I was even able to secure an additional 15% discount, also they gave me 200,000 krw cash back. I did find some grey market retailers out of the US that sold it for the same price I paid for mine but, with grey market there is no manufacturers warranty. Best price at an AD in Korea 2,900,000. US grey market $1980.00 and Canada AD $2875.00. I even declared my watch upon arrival with customs, paid the tax and it was STILL cheaper than any of the other places I looked. Any other questions about it just give me a shout.

Yes, I (actually my wife) bought mine at Lotte DFS and with her 20% discount, I paid about $600 USD less than an AD in North America. Just last week I was looking at some Omega Planet Oceans at Hyundai Dept. Store by COEX and then went to the DFS pretty much right next to it: $1,000 USD less.

I am a big fan of Omega. I was actually looking at a Seamaster chronometer before I pulled the trigger on the TAG. The reason I didnt buy the Seamaster was because after comparing the two side by side I couldnt justify spending almost $1500 more. I am looking into some German made watches now. Sinn and STOWA have some nice pieces.
You should check them out.

you simply don't buy "luxury" time pieces in korea. why?
as a foreigner, you find a greater choice and better prices in your own country. the luxury market for watches in korea is just a fraction of what you can find in japan or china, for example.
of course, you can buy whatever watch you want, but if you're an english teacher, and your dad doesn't own a bank, you should do some serious research on watch forums, understand what qualities or criteria make a luxury watch in the first place, so that you don't regret your purchase in a few years ahead.
also, buying "replica" is not advisable at all. there are simply no "authentic" looking replica available in korea. you won't fool but the fools. even the most widely available copies -rolexes- are recognizable as such from 30 cm distance. "fake watches are for fake people"

nowadays, with few exceptions, the "entry-level" price for a good "luxury" wristwatch is hardly below 5'000 us dollars.

Have you read any of the other comments in this thread?

You can't be serious when you say that China and Japan have a better market.

Lastly, it is in my opinion, that you have absolutely no idea what you are talking about.

I honestly don't like any of them. Too many bells and whistles, not enough sleek, flat class. They all look really bulky.

I like Damasko, Temption, and Jrg Schauer Kulisse pieces a lot, and one will likely be my next purchase. People also have a lot of respect for Sinn. Of course there is Glashtte Original...and Lange & Shne...but they're up a notch or nineteen.
