Oh, no no. I'm just making sure we all give you credit for bringing this idea to our attention. Thank you CC! An apology to fan death and to all those who believe in it. |

Again, why the snide, snippy little comments? This is simply a discussion about an Urban Legend here in Korea and the viability of it. We've had this discussion many times before on this board, and never once do I recall the OP being targeted simply for posting up a link.
If you're really as new as your join date indicates, here's a hint - stay on topic and avoid the personal attacks.
If you're returning after a ban, the above advice stands.
So, any actually comments towards the theories posted? |

I read (yet another) theory about this topic and thought others might be interested in it and somehow that deserves an unoriginal swipe at me?

I think the point that the link is trying to make is that the fan will cause you to sweat more thus making it the/a main culprit in the death. Did you read the main point of it? I'm not supporting it, but his point goes against yours.
If you are in a room with extreme heat and humidity - how much will a fan cool you? |
Fans suck in comparison to A/C. However, in my PERSONAL experience, they do cool you and do evaporate sweat. I guess the big question is, "Do you continue to sweat THAT much through the course of the night for dehydration to kill you?" Probably not. |

Because he's a troll. Simple as that. |

Because
A. You are usually a K apologist.
B. If someone else posted this you would ask ''how does this relate to living or working in Korea la la la la la..?' |

A. Mind taking your ad hominem attacks out of this?
B. Hmmm, let's see. A Korean Urban Legend that almost every foreigner in Korea has been 'confused' by - how exactly would that NOT be linked to living in Korea?
AND, why not actually post on the topic at hand? Nothing to add? |

And what does this have to do with the topic at hand?
Edit: I suppose I should edit my post now too to reflect the fact that you've changed your mind in trolling me. Good to see. |

Fan death has always been, along with Kimchi cures AIDS, one of the dumbest things out there. I've slept with my fan on for years. All night. With the windows all closed tight, no less. Thousands of times. And I am(inexplicably)...still alive.
And Korean chicks that I've been with have also slept in the same room. And they are(inexplicably)...still alive. Then again, according to Korean logic, my being in the room(you know, being a foreigner and all), prevented them from dying.
I wonder how many of the Korean doctors actually believe in that nonsense? |

We aren't CONFUSED by fan death. We simply find the idea absurd. You think Korea has scientific knowledge the rest of the world is unaware of, and are purporting a theory that tries to render sensical the senseless. Sarcasm and parody are appropriate responses to attempts to give reasons for the incredulous.

Indeed, that's what almost every foreigner I meet thinks. (I haven't met Captain Corea yet. Though to be fair, no need to shoot the messenger when he may not himself believe what he is simply starting a thread about. He claimed to be doing no more than providing a link to what someone else thinks, so he's not technically invested in it.)

That's the rub. No need to go down the apologist route, just acknowledge that Koreans believe it as a matter of faith and nothing we say or do (like sleep with fans on as some of us always do) will change that. It's akin to a religious belief. Shake your head at it, tell your friends and family back home and hear them laugh, but by all means accept the fact that Koreans believe it and will continue to believe it. It IS a cultural thing. |

Personally, I believe in the possibility of it, but not the probability of it.
I like to find out where these types of legends come from, and to see if there's any sense behind them. |

What about air conditioner death? Why have I never heard of that? Not catchy enough?
Guess according to the article CC posted, the AC would actually keep you alive whereas the fan would bake you to death.
Belief in fan death among Koreans almost seems like belief in God to me. It is unquestionable, requiring complete faith. If you don't believe, then just sleep with the fan on!
I can't play that game, but I'm sensitive towards my gf's belief in it. She doesn't believe in God or most anything else outside the realm of proven science, but her belief in Fan Death is unassailable.
Does it have more to do with faith in the media than anything else?
It's not a great rift in our relationship. Except for those muggy nights where the AC makes her too cold, and I insist on having the fan on. Then she lets me use the fan, as long as I don't direct it at my face. I guess she's coming around... |
