NaNoWriMo is a non-profit organization that has been organizing a massive annual novel writing movement. Each November, participants are challenged with the task of writing a fiction novel of 50,000 words in a single month. (Details found here: http://www.nanowrimo.org/)
I've participated a few times when I was younger (2002 and 2005, I believe) but I have never completed this difficult task. I have decided this year will be different. Why will it be different? Because this year I have joined the Busan regional group and I will be encouraged by my fellow teachers to really succeed. Additionally, I know many Dave's posters are incredibly intelligent people and to be challenged to go head to head with their word count would surely do me some good.
So who is with me this year? Let's discuss our techniques, our genres, and our inspirations! |

Oh wow, brings me back to the days of LJ. I think I'll try it this year. I think I'll join the Busan group as well. I'm more of an article writer than fiction, so this will be an interesting challenge.
Thinking about doing something lit noir.
What were your previous projects about? What are you planning to write about this time? |

My first one was a coming-of-age literary fiction. My last one was quirky literary fiction. I have used some of these same characters in short fiction when I was in university.
My current story uses a completely fresh character/setting for me. It is sci-fi humor with a lot of those quirky elements that I usually love.
The one sentence synopsis is as follows:
An average working class guy explores the subconscious fantasy worlds of women he encounters in hopes of finding his one "dream girl."
It's set in the near future and involves a drug that stimulates brain wave patterns that enable users to not have to actually sleep more than an hour or so a night. The gist is that since they are awake and lucid during their REM sleep, they never actually experience dreaming anymore. I can tell you more if you want, but you might find it silly.
The noir sounds great. I have a soft spot for cybernoir and the associated fashion and inherent sexiness of the characters. |

I would, but that's hockey season.
Maybe some summer, though that's novel reading season. |

You can write a hockey-themed story!!! Since NaNoWriMo is about quantity over quality, you can probably multi-task and write while watching the games.
(This is based on my personal experience at hockey games where I only notice the fighting and otherwise am daydreaming about Mac cosmetics or wondering where that damn girl is with my rum and coke.) |
