| They exist but they won't ever get any radio or airplay or fame because no one wants to risk their image with something like that. That, and said girl/boy groups provide a huge income and fan base. |

But yes, 2ne1 with their whole gangsta act is putrid and frankly embarrassing for me to watch . Id love if they got dropped off in the hood in the States, and then see if they act/talk like that again. They act like fools and wish they'd stop. But thats YG Entertainment for ya. He copied the American rappers in the 1990's when he was singing and now he just gave birth to new, equally lame psuedo rappers/hood chicks in 2ne1 and Big Bang. Laughable, really. |
There's more to kpop and korean music than what's in this thread.
I'll admit I'm not into the style of the 2NE1 videos but there's more to those girls than you would think. For example, between those girls they speak six languages. (English, French, Japanese, Korean, Filipino & I'm not sure of the other.)
Sandara Park / Dara lived in the Philippines. You can catch clips of her speaking Filipino (Tagalog) on youtube. It's very cute. Park Bom is the "pretty one". Her voice is actually nice, not that you can tell when they autotune it. CL is the rapper. She's the one who spent time in France apparently.
I agree about the styling and the videos. And I'm not into the YG or JYP artists so much. They were founded by hip hop artists so that accounts for all that hip hop in their groups. As for how they'd do in the US, they were #2 on the itunes US hip hop charts this week. Pretty good for a non-english album with no promo. They're working with will.i.am of the black eyed peas for their next album.
I like sment artists a little more, although they are considered an evil empire. As for SNSD (girls generation), give them another look. There are nine girls so there's a decent chance that you might like one. Two of those girls are korean americans so they speak English. Jessica is one of them. She's one of the littler ones, often blonde.
As for other kpop artists, there are some other interesting personalities. There are actually chinese, canadian, thai, american and other nationalities mixed in there. And some of the artists are really talented...some are not. Kpop is popular enough that they're now able to pull people from other countries. Obviously the majority are not though.
And then there's stuff that isn't kpop that (maybe) an average westerner might like.
For hip hop, there's a group of artists called The Movement. Drunken Tiger & Epik High are a few names.
There's korean indie music with groups like Nell, M-existanty Aunt Mary.
There's also ballads, soundtracks, etc.
I'll put up some links later. |
He's not working with them, yet. And i dont care if they have full endorsement from Dr. Dre, Eminem and whoever is popular now, if they come to the States and try the fake gangter routine they'll be laughed off the stage. There's nothing worse than some soft-ass Korean girls acting like they're from the ghetto, and people in America ESPECIALLY are not too accepting of it also. They have no credibility and all they would do is embarrass themselves and whoever is listening to them.
WOndergirls havent made it in the States despite living in NYC and promoting, Se7en is nonexistent, too. Ask any American if they even heard of Wondergirl or se7en and i gaurantee you a blank stare. The truth of the matter is, the only Americans listening to K-pop are Asians living in America. The rest dont know and dont care. |

I remember seeing a big fight on the television back in London between blacks and Koreans. I believe it is termed, err, the LA riots. Guess who lost that day[s] lol

Back home in High School I saw a couple share of fights between Korean girls and black girls who tried to act ghetto. Those ended real fast. It wasn't the Korean girls who lost.
Truth is there are a good many Koreans out there in the States who live/lived in the hood. More I bet than the Dave's crowd.
That being said, the whole ghetto talk stuff is way over the top. It's one thing if a dedicated hip-hop group does it, its another if some group whose previous hit song was "Sunny Love Day" or something like that does it. That just don't jive.
Then again whenever one of us foreigners from Suburbia Circle busts out a little street slang in our youtube video or blog or podcast its alright. But Koreans here? Never! |

I am currently listening to "Living after Midnight" by Judas Priest. Blows all Korean music out of the water. |

You know how Eminem rips apart boy bands and girl bands? A Korean Eminem could rip into 2am/2pm, Big Bang, etc.
Could you imagine substituting some of the K-pop girls' names into Em's lines about Brittany Spears, Chritina Aguilera and Mariah Carey?
The guy would have to REALLY not care about netizens going after him. |
Already happened like 10+ years ago. It was either JoPD or Drunken Tiger who just ripped on all the groups.

No one won. Everyone lost.
The Koreans had plenty of stores burned but many succeeded in saving their stores. Most importantly not one Korean was murdered during the riots. Sadly, several looters were shot and killed by Koreans protecting their stores. Everyone lost that day, no one won. I mean how do you say who won? The Koreans certainly didn't run away or cower and made it clear that if it was going to be an all out war that they wouldn't be an easy mark, all of which they did without any Police Protection. By the way people on Dave's need to take note of that the next time they whine and moan about a lack of police protection and 'violence' against foreigners.
The Koreans are still there and Koreatown has recovered and prospered while building closer ties with the African-American community, amongst other things this included K-Pop artists filming music videos that were sympathetic towards the black community in America.

Ok thuggin. Tell me how your stroll through the Cass Corridor went.
Sure if they came from Korea right off the bat and acted like that it would be a joke. Some of them grew up in the States tho.
Who runs hair shops? Koreans. Where do you find hair hops? Lily white suburbia? No. After the Arabs and the Indians, who runs most of the liquor stores? Koreans. Many of the Koreans who moved here pre-1990 moved to neighborhoods that would cause the people on Dave's to lock their car doors and turn around.
As far as slang goes, I know plenty of Korean people who can speak hair slang and lotto slang. Would someone on Dave's care to impress us with that? Come on those Koreans are fake, you on the other hand are straight from the hood...
I mean, I find wannabe gangstaism as annoying as the next person. But for NETs on Dave's to be acting like they're all hard and came from the hood back home...come on...
That being said, I really can't stand people who act wannabe gangsta on a daily basis, ala Cali Gyopos. Its one thing to put out some music like that and dance to it at the club or put it on while you cruise. But to be an adult and carry on that schtick? Come on. If there is one style I hate worse than board shorts, band t-shirts, and backpacks it's the baggy jeans, Make a Wish hat, sunglasses, and ghetto strut'n'swagger walk or whatever it is these days, you know walking like you have a limp or something. |

Will.I.Am. of the Black Eyed Peas is one of the worst out there. He'll make 2NE1's music even worse. The Black Eyed Peas are the worst excuse for anything that there's ever been. Them and Kanye West can go f k off.
K Pop is basically better than American pop, which is definitely not saying much.
The problem with 2NE1 is that they grew up outside of America, but they're trying to speak English with the 'accent' of blacks who grew up in America, because it's supposed to be cool. I don't walk around speaking English with a British accent to be cool.
Come to think of it, what is with these stupid-ass white 'intellectuals' speaking with faux-British accents? I notice that unattractive girls who are slightly smart do it a lot, I guess because they think it plays up the only thing they have going for them. |

So today i got into a pretty intense argument when one of the girls in my class was singing 2ne1, and i motioned to her that Korean pop is a mirror image of American music. she FLIPPED out on me saying that America copies Korean music . I had to finally agree to disagree with her before she broke down into tears |
After reading this thread I'm still left wondering, why would you argue with a student over something so trivial? You're a teacher, you don't argue with students, unless you're teaching adults. |

I argue with kids all the time when they try to correct ME. For example the way I say can't, the british way, is wrong apparently. Well they're gonna get a firm telling otherwise, let me assure you. Three whips to the palm.
Same with things like 'mongolia' instead of 'mongol' and 'thailand' instead of 'tehland' etc. |

Article on Cho PD dissing G-Drags

Sloppily written article detailing the history.

This is quite a while ago, back when DJ Shine, DJ Jhig, Roscoe and Mickieyes were still members. It is minor conflict between DT and some of the members in YG Family.
-Y.G (Y.G family) dissed Tiger JK when he was accused of using drugs
-Masta wu (Y.G family) and Teddy (1TYM) dissed Drunken tiger by making songs
-DJ Shine dissed Masta wu (Y.G family) on dt-love.co.kr
-DJ Shine dissed Yang Goon on "Knockout kings" from DT's 3rd album
-Dynamic duo (then cb mass) and DT dissed 3534 on "Movement 2"
-DJ shine says in his rap that he slept with yoon hee jung (3534)s girl in movement 2
-DJ Shine is going out with yoon hee jung (3534)s ex now
-Yoon hee jung (3534) and lee hyun do (aka DO) from deux dissed Dynamic Duo (then cb mass)
-cb mass breks up becausse of curbin
-DT disses curbin on their 4th lp
-tbny and dynamic duo and epik high diss curbin
Personally, this is going back to the hazy days of Senior year at H.S. I think on the 1999 대한민국 Hip Hop project album there was some talk about 'real' rappers vs. fake ones.
I know Drunken Tiger came out from the start and basically called all the Korean rappers, at the time, posers with maybe a few exceptions.
I know the DJ DOC song LIE is a counter to someone's diss of them. That songs pretty fun to listen to. If your Korean boss ever ticks you off so much that you want to make AN EXIT, play this.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pxc36D9qieI
Do not play this at work.
Anyway, I'm sure 90% of these 'controversies' are for show and to generate hype for record sales, same as back home.

In spite of one's personal biases and preconceived notions you'd be surprised at what you can find out when you speak another country's language and/or actually familiarize yourself with the subject at hand before forming an opinion.

Well when said with a Welsh-American accent the word "can't" sometimes causes the more immature amongst us to snicker in laughter. In a teaching environment I think in that case it would be quite all right to call it wrong, especially for workplace English students.
Manager Elisha Taylor- "Mr. Kim did you say you can or you can't?"
Mr. Kim (in Welsh-American Accent) "Can't"
(No further dialogue, simply watch as Mr. Kim is fired and charged with workplace harassment, levied a $500,000 judgment, loses home, divorced and now alcoholic and suicidal)

Uhm, whoever wrote this, you do realize that Mozart wrote Operas right? If there was a Noraebang that put La Ci Darem La Mano or Non Piu Andrai or Voi Che Sapete in the mix I'm sure there are a few out there who could do it justice. Heck even Charlotte Church's English rendition of Voi Che Sapete.
In fact, that gets me steamed. I would love to belt out some 'Modern Major General' or 'Pirate King' or some Broadway tunez at the Noraebang. Boo Noraebang. |

Sorry, that was me. I was leaning more towards his non opera stuff. I guess I didn't really make that clear. Sorry!
I do have to agree though. They do need more Broadway songs. I think the only one I managed to find was from Phantom of the Opera. |
