I'm researching whether to get one or not. For those of you that drive here you realize that Koreans drive with blinders on and any accident will always be the waygook's fault.
Does anyone have a black box system? If so, pls share all the details you can. I can't find squat on the net.

Since your base premise is completely wrong, your conclusion that you need a black box is also pretty suspect.

Really?

I've been driving for 10 years in Korea and have been in two accidents both of which the Korean driving the other car was found to be at fault.

I was in one where the judgement was 70/30 in my favour...In Canada, it would've been 100/0 in my favour. Oh well.

Alright then, disregarding the three cases I know of persnonally where a bicyclist was hit by a car then blamed 100%, and two instances of Korean drivers conspiring with nearby Korean witnesses rendering the foreigner at fault, does anybody have any info on black boxes?

I'll bet that if you go to any car "tuning" or "audio" shop, they will get you set up. However, you'll probably need a Korean speaker to help you out (if you don't speak it yourself, that is).

you can easily get one on gmarket:
http://english.gmarket.co.kr/challenge/neo_goods/goods.asp?goodscode=180306238&pos_shop_cd=EN&pos_class_cd=90000003&pos_class_kind=T

I use bb since day one when I got car. The model that I use is different but it looks like it is not available on gmarket anymore.

I've had a different black boxes in my car. All of which were Korean brands and they all were terrible.

The whole point of getting a black box is to either record an accident while driving OR to catch a hit and run if you park your car in a lot. The reason I bought one was to catch those hit and run drivers who back up and ding your car and drive away. Problem is the black boxes here do not have good enough quality so you can read the plate number.

I've had about 5 different brands put in after the car shop didn't believe I wasn't able to get the plate number off the car after playing the video file back. So they tried different brands and the ones they used were of bad filming quality. Most I tried ranged from 150 - 400,000 won and all were of no good to me. They always try to mount the unit itself inside the car just below the rear view mirror. Well thats great for filming accidents BUT not great if you want to read a plate number. I suggested they mount the camera down by the front bumper but they said the camera is not waterproof so you cant do that. And of course they didn't have any waterproof cameras so I had them return my money.

There is however a really good one I found but it costs 1 mil won and comes with 4 cameras. 2 mounted just below the side mirrors and 1 front and rear camera.

In my opinion if you want a black box for recording accidents while driving then sure it would be beneficial but to use it for those hit and runs while your not in the car i'd pass.

The last time I got dinged was at my uni. I just came outside to get something out of my car and I see this new Daewoo Statesmen (i think it was that car) backing up next to my car. Guy has a new luxury car with backup sensors and still manages to hit my rear bumper enough to push the car a foot or two. Then the *beep* decides to drive away.. believe that? There are students all over the place and not one person says a damn thing. But I was there to run down and stop the guy. After which time he agrees its his fault, only because I caught him in the act , and that he will pay for all damages.

Well I got him good and milked the insurance company. I went to the body shop of my choice to get the bumper fixed. I asked the body shop if he could do body and paint work on other parts of the car. Sure enough he accepted my offer and albiet ran the total cost through his insurance company.

Before that incident I had about 3 other hit and runs in my parking lot over a three month period. And I swore the next person who hit my car would pay for all those other drivers who dinged me and ran off.. well it sure paid off.

Smile

That one is good for recording while you drive but not for when your car is unattended to catch a hit & run driver.

If you do get one make sure the install guys hard wire the power cable to the car so it runs 24/7. That way you dont have to worry about turning it on or changing the battery for that matter.

Thanks everyone, especially Gideon. I was just about to go out and get one tomorrow. Yes in fact I was looking for the rear view as well do catch the dingball dingers.
I noticed JANUS-V2 had a decent system but then JANUS V-1 Echo seems good. It has a second camera for the rear and I'll ask them if they can mount it so it'll read a plate.
JANUS has English support as it's sold in Europe. Made by Hyundai.

Just make sure you have them test out the unit first. Have them back a car up close to the front and then the rear bumper while the unit is recording so you can test it out. After that have them take out the memory chip and plug it into their computer to see if you can actually read the plate from the other car.

Perfect meaning it has a second, detached cam to put in your rear window that can read a plate, GPS, and English support on the web.

and a good video of it here:

I'm gonna get one no matter how much it is! (Not open today)

I wonder if it can be mounted to catch side-swipers or t-boners.

My parking lot doesn't have CCTV and I've had a bunch of damage done to my car, but not from the rear. Dummies doing 3-point u-turns and catching my bumper or just backing up directly into my door, Evil or Very Mad

It really sucks sharing your parking lot with a po-jang-ma-cha that's open until the wee hours...

Haha...that's a funny sounding post...lol

I don't want to be negative but I already had this same model installed in my car and they could not read the plate number after playing the recorded video clip.

Perhaps they have a better camera in them now. So I hope it works out for you. Please let us know how it works and upload a video of your own if you can so we can see quality.

I only preferred the black boxes that have built in lcd screens so you can show the other driver or police how the accident occured right there on the spot. I suspect this device costs under 180,000 won. The one I had was over 350,000 won which would have been perfect had it not been camera quality.

I saw the youtube one so I suspect the same quality when you buy it.

Good luck!!

btw - how much is this model going for?

I am just curious as to what kind of car you own that would warrant a device like this.

I have an 01 Hyundai Tuscani that had a new paint job and then got dinged 3 times which was why i wanted to get a black box. Although since that time the marks have been touched up so you wont see them in the pics.

Actually here is a link to my car
