*caution: Even if you extend your visa in 2010 but the extension will run into 2011 then you will still need to bring in a federal level background check.

Then that would mean that everyone on E2s would need a national CBC, right? Since if you extend in 2010, your extension is good for a year, which would take you into 2011.

EDIT: Sorry, bUt that info is wrong. I've had two friends renew in August. Their visas are good until Aug 2011. Neither needed a CBC, nor an apostillised degree.

thanks. i thought it was fishy too. must've been a poor translation or something.

First attempt didn't work. Don't know why.

Let's see if this works. Go to the Korean Immigration website

http://www.immigration.go.kr/HP/IMM80/index.do

1. Select "VISA"
2. At the top of the page, select "Visa Issuance Guide - stay of status"
3. Under the heading, "Employment Visa," select "Foreign Language Instructor (E2)."

That should delineate the new requirements for E2 Visas.

That's a lot of hoops to jump through! Good luck to all.

Anyone know if the most current E2 guidelines allow you to have a notarized letter (and apostilled) from your school concerning graduation? I finished the last of my classes this summer but need to start applying ASAP. However, I wont have the physical diploma until December though. Anyone know if the letter from the school will still work, or have any suggestions?

Same question here. I've been getting different answers from everybody. Out of 6 recruiting companies I've spoken with, 4 say I need the apostilled diploma copy while 2 say a verification letter is acceptable.

I literally just graduated September 8th & my university said the physical diploma won't be ready until at least December. My counseling office wrote me a degree verification letter so I'm hoping I can just get that notarized/apostilled.

According to the new E2 visa guidelines (hikorea.go.kr):

Starting from 2010.9.1 applying for the visa issuance number and sojourn related work(extension, workplace transfer, visa status transfer, activities beyond the limits of current status)should hand in a diploma copy or a obtained degree certificate or a graduation certificate, which has gotten a apostille stamp or a verification from the Korean consulate of the foreigner's own country or a verification from the Korean Council for University Education to the immigration office. The document is required once during the foreigner's Korea sojourn period.

What exactly is a "obtained degree certificate" I seriously hope that a verification letter is acceptable. If anybody has any more info, that would be great.

Notes for consulates receiving visa applications
Checking whether the applicant is eligible to apply for a visa from a third country.
- From immigration information system: Navigate to「Visa→Visa issuance certificate」, find Education Verification (new), then check for entry of 「Education verification (Korean Council for University Education)」
- From immigration information system: Using「Stay →Registration→Foreigner registration」, check for whether the applicant has a record of having stayed with Professorship (E-1), Foreign Language Instructor (E-2) and Research(E-3) status
- From immigration information system: Using「Crime control →Crime inspection→Search criminal record」, check for record of lawbreaking activities during the applicants past stays in Korea
For foreigners that are not eligible for application in the concerned consulate, instruct them to apply for visa issuance from a Korean consulate in their home country.
Special privileges granted to foreign language instructors selected through the English Program In Korea (EPIK) system (as overseen by Ministry of Education, Science Technology)
Visa issuance application and approval process will remain unchanged.
Certification of criminal records is exempted for foreign instructors that are extending their stay for the first time, if they have entered or registered as foreigner before the revision of the law made it a requirement. Also, instead of submitting their health examination records, they must submit HIV test results and drug usage test (TBPE test) results.
Apostille Treaty
Apostille treaty abolishes requests for validating foreign documents (Tresty #1854, Effective as of July 14th, 2007)
Documents from countries under the same treaty (92 countries) affixed with an apostille bear the same effect as having verification from the local Korean consulate.
If applicant's nation is not member of Apostille Treaty, consulate's verification is the same as the past.
For more information on the apostille treaty, please visit http://www.0404.go.kr
For issuance contact points in countries that signed the apostille treaty, please click here.

My understanding of this is that MY country is the US, so even if my degree is from another country, I can still get it apostillisated in the US. Smile If that's not the case, they ought to change their wording

Do you need to get the background checks done if you have an F2 visa?

No, if you have an F2, your visa is connected to your spouse, as far as I know. Though it might be possible that schools could ask you for it if you work with kids.

I need to go through the whole diploma verification thing to renew my E-2...is it possible to get an apostille while in Korea instead of going through the KCUE? Are there any local places to get something like that done or will I have to rely on an online service or my family back home? And would it be cheaper/faster than the KCUE anyway?

I would like to go to Korea to teach, but I am worried about the TB blood exam that is done in Korea. I had the latent form of TB when I was a toddler. I received treatment and was pronounced healthy. I have my medical record saying so. I do not have TB, can't get TB, and can't give TB to anyone. However, I still test positive to a TB blood test. My question is, when I get to Korea, take the blood test and test positive, are they going to deport me? Is there anything I can do to prevent this from happening?

I called the consulate and was told that they couldn't answer my question. My recruiting company just keeps telling me that I might be deported. Has anyone gone through this?

I went to get my state-level criminal background check notarized today. However, the notary guy says he's not sure what to do because there's no signature on the background check.

He says he can a certified copy thing like he did with my degree verification letter.

Which one is it? Do I submit the original background check or is the certified copy notarized one?

Am I right in thinking that these new guidelines mean we can just send our original degree certificate, without notarising & apostilling it? I'm getting mixed reports across the intertubes, but that seems to be what it's saying to me.

I apologize for asking but I need clarification.

FIRST:

I am a Canadian. In 2009 I submitted a CRC that was a FEDERAL check and certified by the RCMP in Ottawa. It has only 1 seal/stamp/certification on it and that is the RCMP.

My question:

Since citizens of Non USA countries excluding Canada are exempt because their CRC's were Federal....................Do I need to re-submit another federal CRC????

It makes no sense that I do.

Second: My diploma. Was NOTARIZED by my attorney in Canada. He has the legal authority to authenticate documents. He does not work for any embassy or gov't.

My question: My notarized diploma - is that good enough?

I understand Korean Imm wants a "certification" from a CDN office as well as the Korean embassy in my country.

So since my attorney stamped it - can I bypass my gov't and just get the Korean embassy to certify it?

OR if my attorney is not valid - can the CDN Embassy in Seoul notarize it and then I ship it off to Ottawa to the Korean embassy?

What a pain.
